Do I have to have read some Kafka in order to appreciate Kafka on the Shore?

>> No.1219566

nope

Mukakami fucking loves Kafka doesn't he?

He loves to flaunt his knowledge of Western literature and music in his books, judging by the two novels of his I've read. It gets ridiculous though, in Kafka on the Shore he spent an entire paragraph talking about how awesome Prince is and loves to specify exactly what track the protagonist is listening to.

does this take away from the story at all?

Ok, you just convince me not to read him. I fucking hate useless references to pop culture.

I mean, it's not 'useless', there's a point to it for Murakami - it's part of his literary project. It's a valid objection, though. I'm not really Murakami's biggest fan myself.

It's good though.
Don't let one anon change your mind.

Not really. The story was still quite fun to read.

It's not the first time I hear about that. I really hated American Psycho when he talks about Genesis or whatever. I know it has a purpose, but it doesn't change the fact that it's boring to read.

Yeah, I couldn't help but think of that chapter where they seemed to literally just copy a review of Huey Lewis and the News and paste it into the book when I read Kafka on the Shore. Granted, Kafka on the Shore isn't half as bad as American Psycho when it comes to wasting paper with useless shit (yeah yeah I guess it exemplifies how shallow yuppies are or something) but it does get on your nerves after a while.

Thats not what I meant. While he does mention Kafka a lot in his books. He's also trying his best to BE like Kafka. Which is kind of lame.

I mean not that I'm complaining, I love both authors. But c'mon

Something is bugging me with Kafka on the Shore. I won't bother with another topic so I'll ask here.

I'm not a big fan of anime and manga. I do not hate it and I do watch or read some, but I dislike wackiness and how woman are represented. So I picked this novel, expecting to see a different view on Japanese life. But what I found is something that is present in nearly every anime and manga. You have all the things there. Guy talking to cats, ufos, some gore, and teenage protagonist who gets a handjob from the first girl that he meets.

So, the problem I have is why is noone openly hating this in a book as much as they openly hate it in manga?
