You can only innovate by breaking the mold. And by that, in turn, breaking what was previously donned as incorrect. Following a guide on how to write is like following a guide on how to talk or how to act or how to do anything. If you're goal is to get by and not be of something greater than is currently available, then following these how to books will be your get rich quick ticket to mediocrity.
Read them, but take their opinion with some onion and pepper and add your own spices to the mix. Rules in art aren't hard and fast, especially with literature where your limit is the theoretical limit of the human mind.
