Why did Gonzo never really take off in mainstream literature and journalism. Thompson is still the only one of his kind, as far as I know, and besides his work I don't think anyone else did anything of the caliber.

no one came close to his talent. most HST "fans" haven't even read his work and just have seen the fear and loathing movie. Source: in college and even high school i knew many stoners who had hst posters and shirts who had never read one of his books, and if they had it was always fear and loathing in Las Vegas, a novel that doesn't really give a fair insight into his greater body of work.
