The cover is obvi a focus on the symbolism of the Eckleburg sign as the eyes of God overlooking the city of material pleasure with judgement.

It's related to the theme but it's not on the artistic level as the 1st edition covers for Gatsby, The Sun Also Rises, The Grapes of Wrath, The Catcher in the Rye, etc.

Fitzgerald actually changed the novel to fit this cover. That cover spoiled us. It’s that good.
Pic-related: the Macbeth verse includes “life is a walking shadow.” The artist is female (need to research more), it’s a fragment of a painting. Faulkner understood modern art. He oozed it. Absolutely love book covers
