I'm assuming you read it in English and therefore shouldn't be completely certain of your opinion on it.

Are you saying Kirkpatrick's translation is overhyped or the Comedy in general? Because if it's the latter then >>12145941

IMO, it is one of the saddest things ever written. It is just filled with a pervasive sense of loss and mourning, and given the circumstances it was written under, I suppose it makes sense. Very bittersweet and beautiful book.

I'm reading the Longfellow translation with Gustav Dore illustrations.

Anybody here with an opinion on Esolen’s translation? It’s not in the usual Dante chart but I always hear good stuff about him. I also like his translation for Jerusalem Delivered.

This. It isn't the most difficult language to learn.

There is a quite decent chart floating around here but i would say that for the seriously minded the Hollander translation is probably the best one.
it's up there with Durling translation for sheer scholarly flair, but it's also really well written.

But for a first time reader it may be worth looking at some of the more poetic translations instead and just supplement them with guide . for those i'd recommend Robert Pinsky , W.S. Merwin, Sean O'brien and Clive James . (CJ especially)
As for guides the best one is Reading Dante : From Here to Eternity.

Good luck
