There is a lot of books about love, but most of them are written for women with the women’s bias of what the perfect relationship would be. Are there any good fiction books written for men about loving a woman?

Rilke's poetry obliterated me when a girl I fell in love with introduced me to it.

There's been a lot of great love poetry for centuries. But frankly, I don't have a lot of patience for books that simply wallow in one feeling for too long, so that's why the distillation of a feeling into song appeals to me more for romance.

Splitting the difference, I might recommend Karel Macha's May which is quite romantic when it isn't about death.

I don't know what makes love more "masculine" except feeling doomed self-loathing.

I enjoyed every book i read by Yoshio Osaki when I was in middle school precisely because his stories felt like it was written with solely male audiences in mind. To the best of my memory all the protagonists in his books were men and their love interests were like moe characters but with a sufficient amount of depth and sufficiently well written. The stories were all melancholic too albiet they were a bit melodramatic but I enjoyed that aspect of it too. Kinda felt romantic. And his prose is very explicit in the sex scenes so yeah insanely fun read if youre a guy.

Unfortunately i dont think there are any english translations of his books but look up pilot fish, adiantum blue, and quatre septembre

The only one I've played that was better than KS was Saya no Uta, but that's a horror VN and I couldn't fap to the somewhat shoehorned in sex scenes. Clannad was pretentiously long and I didn't finish it, and the only other ones I've played were a few nukiges.

I only played the Emi, Hanako and Rin routes, and the other half of the routes could be bad. Idk. Emi was a nice slutty girl for fun times. Hanako was surprisingly shallow and disappointing, since I found her to be the most attractive and mysterious, and Rin was an absolute emotional rollercoaster and my favorite of the girls, and of the routes, construction-wise.

Lily and the blue haired girl both seemed uninteresting. I don't know. What are these great VNs I'm supposedly missing out on?

>Clannad was pretentiously long and I didn't finish it
You should watch the anime instead then (the KyoAni series). Its adaptation of the latter part of the VN, After Story, is actually better than the VN. And coincidentally that's the best part of the story, which you missed by dropping it. If I ever recommend Clannad to someone I always tell them to watch the anime instead because of the structural issues with the game, which cause most people will drop it before they get to part of it that makes it so great.
>What are these great VNs I'm supposedly missing out on?
Little Busters, Rewrite, Muv-Luv Alternative, Subahibi, Dies Irae, Planetarian, Ef. One that recently got translated that I thought was great is Island. Anyway, here's the list of VNs on VNDB organized by voter ranking, from best to worst

Yeah if you watch it you should watch both seasons of the show. Whoever said not to watch the first season is an idiot as it sets up lots of aspects of the story that are important in season 2, to the point that you wouldn't be able to understand a lot of things near the end at all. The first season isn't bad or anything, but it isn't a masterpiece like the second becomes later on.

>Clannad VN is much better than the anime because the routes go much deeper (and the emotional intensity is much greater, especially because of the strength of the symbolism).
I agree that the VN is better, but only until After Story.
>Though maybe you're right about After Story though I haven't arrived there yet..
Then don't criticize too much until after you've watched the entire thing. The quality of the show drastically improves the further you get into Season 2. To rattle off some of the things that are better in the show (I'll use spoilers):
Tomoya simply having a design and a voice actor improves After Story considerably, since the primary focus is his own character development. The show also adds subtle details like lines under his eyes and facial weariness, reflecting the years of depression, alcoholism, and trying to work himself to death.
All of the emotional scenes makes full use of the new medium, for example the montage of Tomoya growing up when he talks to his grandmother about his father; all of the scenes are timed with the soundtrack perfectly to maximize the emotional effect.
The original scenes, which are few, are very good; e.g. Ushio being drawn to the hospital, or Tomoya singing Ushio to sleep with the Dango Song (which doesn't even exist as a full song in the game).
The show fixes Nagisa's death scene. In the game they just decide for her to give birth at home and never call an ambulance even though it's clear the delivery is going poorly. In the show they decide to go to a hospital but get snowed in and she goes into labor early. The addition of snow in this scene also fits with the supernatural nature of her illness which grows worse in winter when the trees die, mirroring Ushio's death in the snow. The VN portrayal of her death is bizarre in this regard.
The show fixes the pacing of the ending to deliver maximum emotional impact. In the game you're sent back to the title after Ushio dies, then you have to collect any light orbs you have left, and then you get to get the true ending; whereas in the show the true ending occurs directly after Ushio dies so you are able to get catharsis at the correct time.
The show fixes Tomoya's character development. In the VN Nagisa only survives in an alternate universe and she stays dead in the other. In the show Tomoya is basically sent back through time to the point where she died, but this time she survives, and he keeps all of his memories of everything that happened. This allows him to keep all of his character development from After Story rather than losing it like in the VN.
I could go on but I've already typed a lot.

>>12134002
I spent a whole year reading it (because I read one day of the VN every RL day.) And it was an incredible experience; however, my absorption was so intense that I ended up sort of confusing the Clannad fantasy with my reality, and in some ways changed my world forever [for the worse] (though I won't describe it here).
>I'll use spoilers):
I won't read the spoilers, but I'd just like to say that my favorite route is Kotomi Ichinose's route which I believe is the /lit/est (because you know of the Young's reference, and she has the best character development, and even if the story is not exactly uber-complex, it's the darkest and most beautiful)

The only thing I spoiled where some differences between the show and the game. If you've read the game then it's not like it's going to ruin anything for you. It's a faithful adaptation; a few things just happen in a different manner.
>Kotomi's route
This is my favorite route too and I've read it several times. It was written by the same person that wrote Planetarian, which is the reason for the science fiction aspects I think. One of the most interesting parts of the route is the light orb that floats down from the sky and causes Tomoya to regain his past memories. The game doesn't give any explanation of course, but my personal theory is that it was sent by Kotomi's parents, similar to Shima sending a light orb to Misae from the afterlife. Anyway, the game and show had a strong effect on me as well (mostly positive but some negative). You aren't the only one.

Maybe you misunderstood her character? Nagisa is supposed to represent the ideal citizen that always works hard and does their best as part of the collective (family/society/etc), even if they can't do very much ultimately. That's why she wants to restart the theater club, so that she can work hard in a group. That's why starting a family with Tomoya is important to her, so that they can work hard together as a group. It's through her as well as his other relations that Tomoya is able to understand what a family is, to accept his own family, and to become part of the societal family.

Well I haven't been reading much lately, but that's pretty much where I am at, and I see how that could be. In relation to that, I've always felt that the extra dimensions are related to how the visual novel branches out, though it doesn't stand up to scrutiny because Calabi-Yau Manifolds are compactified... Maybe the routes could indeed be connected like you said, I wonder if there's some consistency in the orbs, like some science to the magic..
>Anyway, the game and show had a strong effect on me as well (mostly positive but some negative). You aren't the only one.

You should definitely read it, and definitely the VN before the anime, maybe if you want you can leave the Afterstory of the VN for last (and watch the anime instead). But the anime will spoil you a lot, from the small bits I watched, I can gather that it's mostly a summary of the VN, it feels way too packed together into a messy comic sappy version of the original.

The music is intoxicating and melancholic, the contents are quite insightful, the atmosphere is pretty magical, there are comfy parts that make you feel very cozy, boring parts that make you feel equally detached as the protagonist and emotionally intense parts that leave you crying and depressed until you arrive at (I suppose most of) the third acts so I would recommend you to avoid leaving them hanging or they'll break you.

You know, most people just drop the VN because of how long and convoluted it is and they never even get close to unlocking After Story. If you look at the achievement statistics on Steam, only 6.5% of owners have the achievement for the true ending. I really recommend not telling people to play the game first. It's such a humongous time investment and basically impossible without a walkthrough. If they watch the anime they'll get to After Story in a reasonable amount of time and be able to decide if they want to make the investment in the VN. Also go watch the rest of the anime. You're really missing out on something special.

>> No.12134263

>humongous time investment
Well if you see life like that. I personally would recommend you all to stop thinking of life in terms of *achievements completed*. If you could spend your whole life reading just one single book, if that book was immensely beautiful, there would be no need for more. It's the process that matters, the becoming, the journey, the activity not the object, the being, the outcome, the status, the goal. Just take it slowly, read every day one day of the VN, don't make yourself big expectations about what you can complete in one day, just savour your reading as much as you can. If you feel acutely delighted then you are homing in on the intrinsic values that actually matter.

>Also go watch the rest of the anime. You're really missing out on something special

I'm not thinking in terms of "achieving things." On Steam you get an "achievement" if you finish various parts of the game. You get one when you finish the true ending. If only 6.5% of people have that achievement, it means that only 6.5% of the people that bought the game actually finished it. 93.5% of people dropped it. I agree with what you're saying about reading, but the fact is that the vast majority of people don't finish the game, and I think it's fairly clear why that is. Even compared to other visual novels it's very long and the way you unlock some of the light orbs and the true ending is overly complex.

But I'm arguing in part that there might be no need to finish the game since it's arleady very good without one having to read the afterstory, though you're the one who has completed it so you might have some reason to think that.

This board is fucking garbage, literally the only real romance. Don Quixote is romantic but its with his waifu not a real fucking gross ass 3D woman.

The Iliad really shows the love of so many characters in brilliant emotion. Real romance isn't sexual so don't tell fucking stupid women that.

Do men even have feelings? I've never met a man that had a shred of empathy, even when they are "depressed" it's all about ohhhh no I will never have this 10/10 asian stacy suck my penis or waaaaaah women find men who are taller more attractive, do they care about love or friendship or anything deeper than sex and social status. I've never seen proof of a man actually being able to feel love. It's always about ownership, status, and how they want to have multiple women at once.

To be honest, I've kind of given up on male friendships because it seems like most of the time they want to be friends with me to get into my pants. I've literally had men DEMAND I give them a chance even when in relationships. It's like a horrid pattern of, a guy will "be friends" with you, but then when they learn you aren't interested in dating them, they bail. Men are just not worthy of female friendships.

Fucking read Turgenev. Great love novels, and they're short, too. First Love and Torrents of Spring are good. Even Fathers and Sons has a good romantic element to it. Sportsman's Sketches doesn't have it (at least not very often). But First Love is a great one, probably one of my favorite stories. I haven't read more than that, but Turgenev is a great author so far. He writes from a very tender perspective, as a male.

The problem is being emotional and weak is the most unattractive thing a man can do. So it rather hard to be a friend and lover at the same time. So if a man is attracted to you he probably won't show you his emotional side until you are somewhat deep in a relationship.

>I've kind of given up on male friendships because it seems like most of the time they want to be friends with me to get into my pants.
Become friends with guys who are in relationships if you want to make sure. But the problem is that if a man finds a woman who genuinely shares his interests then it like finding a unicorn and many guys would do a lot to get in a relationship with such a woman, including ruining a friendship.

>> No.12136320

>most of the time
Protip: The ones who don't try to get in your pants are actually gay or too cucked to try. 100% of (hetero) male-female friendships is based on the man wanting to fuck the woman. 100%. Any man who says otherwise is just saying that to sleep with you.

a better question is, do women feel love? every women that i have seen been in a relationship has always had thoughts of leaving or cheated on their significant other and/or had a really hard time TRYING to stay faithful.
Now every man i have seen that has been in a relationship has told me about how all the things they want to do with their significant other and work their asses off just to try to get them something nice and are genuine when they say they want to spend the rest of their lives with them.
Why is it that when women say they want to spend the rest of their lives with a man they really mean for the next 2-3 years?
