I just read it. It's good. First half is great. I hated all the French words in it.

I've found this to be the case too. Ada is way overrated.

Nabokov in general is overrated. He's pitched perfectly at undergraduates who think they appreciate literature better than plebs. Same way any play about actors gets overrated by luvvies

Honestly I was kind of bored by it. I could see it being considered a good literary experiment, but often it's considered one of the greatest novels of all time right up there with The Great Gatsby, Ulysses, and Hamlet, and I just don't see what people are supposed to get out of it

>> No.12133734

>>12133716
Hamlet isn't a novel, and The Great Gatsby and Ulysses get overrated more than Lolita

>> No.12133738

>>12132210
I think Lolita is his best work, Sebastian Knight and Pnin are very enjoyable too

I don't like the books from the late part of his career, they are too gimmicky and experiential I prefer a more conventional novel. His early works feel a bit clunky, not sure if it's the translation issue or he was just less experienced.

Forgot I wrote "novel" instead of "works of literature" I was just mindlessly pulling examples of whatever other people think is "the greatest book of all time" and point still stands I don't see how a goofy experiment like Lolita is anywhere near that kind of zealous acclaim

Hamlet isn't a book neitheir m8. It was first published as part of the First Folio. But I think Ulysses>Lolita>Great Gatsby

I'm not sure if you have read Ulysses but it's more of a goofy experiment than Lolita

>one of the finest pieces of literature ever produced
By no means finest. I did thoroughly enjoy it though. I really did identify with Hubbard at times. I've courted several young girls and can sympathize with his frustration. The road trip phase of the book tended to drag on but I think the finale made the challenge worthwhile. Two parts of this book have stuck with me, Hubbart's first meeting Lo, and the finale just before his arrest.
Historically speaking, it wasn't until *modern* times (post-suffrage) that "people" became so up tight about the age difference in regard to relationships. Anyone who thinks this moralist "issue" is what the story is about is missing out.

>> No.12133800

>>12133794
I called it a work of literature. Besides, a book is just bound pages and a cover. I've seen Hamlet in that format

He's probably a Burgerfat. They see art like any ther business.

>> No.12133852

It's competently but not impressively written and it nails the whole concept about the pedoshit and the relationship between reader and narrator. Imo that isn't super interesting even if pulled off well so it doesn't do much for me other than make me uncomfortable, which isn't meaningful in and of itself. I can see the appeal and have some level of respect for it, but it really is a gimmick novel.

>> No.12133855

>>12133852
I don't see the gimmick. Pale Fire is def gimmicky but Lolita feels more organic.

>> No.12133856

>>12133840
What's wrong with using that word? It's not what I would default to but you're certainly producing something when you make art.

"Gimmick" might be a bit too strong, but it definitely relies on the game between the narrator and reader. If you don't give a shit about that, you won't give a shit about the novel as a whole, most likely. It's not as well-rounded in its quality / appeal as other canonized literature.
