Because 90% of /lit/ apparently think 'Blood Meridian' is the only book ever written.

Unironically turned me into a bongaboo. They're a little on the old side which, combined with the fact that they're essentially comedy adventures makes them have a very niche audience.

My pet theory?
because 90% of the wankers on here don't actually read the books mentioned, and are content to spout the same shit about the same half a dozen books that get shilled on here on a tediously regular basis.

There are pages and pages of posts about Flashman in the warosu archives. It's more popular than, say, The Tartar Steppe.

and the Tartar Steppe is more popular than the Opposing Shore, which is much better.

Do I have to read Tom Brown's School Days first?

>> No.12126720

it's not essential. Flashman is a secondary character in that. All you get is the context that Flashman is a shitty guy, which is amusing because he always ends up as the hero.
But you get the fact that Flashman is a shitty guy in every Flashman book, so it isn't really essential.

Because it's pulp fiction. You don't see people discussing Tom Clancy very often

what a spanner. you do know the first volume was mistaken for an authentic memoir by some newspaper, right?
it's well written, well researched and highly entertaining. hardly Tom Clancy (PBUH) tier.

"Well researched" undersells it. I've read History doctoral theses with less exhausting work done in them. I don't think there's another modern author who so vividly and viscerally captures the feel of the Victorian world. Not even John Fowles in the French Lieutenant's Woman does it as well, and that's more accepted as great literature.
