I remember reading this when I was younger and being coompletely immersed in the narrative

and then afterwards attempting vainly to maintain killer apes who beat people to death with big sticks in a manner not unlike Jurrassic Park's Raptors made complete sense.

Its a flimsy technothriller in the jungle. Just have fun with the adventure while it lasts

that does happen, but afterwards the team finds the lost city, with the help of ape that does sign language, and finds a bunch of diamonds. But before they can get the diamonds the place explodes because of a volcanic eruption and the team manages to escape
