Don't bother. I get the feeling that Finnegans Wake was written by Joyce purely to laugh at critics when they inevitably praised it, because he knew it was shit

You literally have to become joyce to understand it fully. Not shitposting.

>when they inevitably praised it
Joyce got absolutely shit on by critics when he was publishing work in progress.

Imagine how easy Finnegan's Wake would be to write today.
>write a novel normally
>go on thesaurus.com and replace every word with most obscure synonym
>then proceed to translate some words into latin, some into greek, some into french

Best post, only he can actually know what his mind was doing at each phase.

OP, it's not so much being smart, as being culturally prepped/well read, to understand and pick up on the various memes/jokes/references. I've read almost none of what I'm about to quote you, but it's clear to me that reading this stuff is a big help.

-Iliad/Odyssey (Ulysses prep).
-Some Plato/Aristotle (prep since Joyce received a classical Western education and used that in his stuff)
-a brief history of Ireland, take your pick (cultural grounding)
-Joyce's major works: Dubliners, Potrait, Ulysses (natch, a progression for understanding what comes later)
-Vico, New Science (purported to be a basis for the Wake)

-Personally, I found it useful to read large books about the Book of Kells (that edition's image) and the Bayeux Tapestry over a year ago, for general cultural grounding and out of personal interest. Still, the above for their own sake at the time.

Afterbirth-literature on the subject includes the McLuhan's works (father and son), the McKenna book and/or the "Skeleton key", I forget which is which here.

Add to this obviously familiarity with the various languages that Joyce was using/punning in, generally northern euro languages and whatever else.

>On Good Friday in the year 1938, the writer Jacques Mercanton paid a call on his friend James Joyce. He found the author deep in conference with lit scholar Stuart Gilbert - Joyce was distrubed that a passage in Finnegans Wake was "still not obscure enough." The solution: Joyce decided to add some words from the language of the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia.
Genius writer, everyone
