If it's appropriate for the setting and narrative, sure. Being edgy doesn't make your writing good though.

Joseph Conrad titled one of his works "The Nigger of the Narcissus", and he's seems to be all the craze these days. So my answer is yeah.

Funnily enough his editors pressed him to change the title when bringing the book to the US. Not because it was offensive but because Americans wouldn't want to read a book about a nigger

No, "the N-Word" should never be used in literature. If you need to describe someone as being a "nigger", then do so. Using "the N-Word" - as if "Nigger" were the unspeakable name of God - is so ridiculous that it marks you as a sycophant. Keep in mind that excessive use will show bias and will likely damage your narrative. There should only be rare circumstances in which you actually need to use "nigger". Also, reconsider why you think about niggers so much that you see a need to write about them.

I tried to find an example for you and I found this article that I believe argues the point from my perspective.

You're asking the wrong question, it's "at what point does using the word nigger detract from the literary work".

>> No.12100006

Isn't it already? I mean, I haven't kept up with the last twenty years, and it most probably is "problematic" nowadays, but I was initially somewhat surprised to come across the word in quite a few big books of American literature, which do not seem to have gotten an adverse reaction to them because of their usage of the word (usage that is, however, usually "in character") - while one could probably not get away with such usage on TV or many a motion picture. I'm thinking of Naked Lunch, Gravity's Rainbow, Breakfast of Champions, and, more recently (though probably already too long ago), American Psycho. Thoughts?

Why is "nigger" offensive, anyway? It should be about as meaningful as calling someone "whitey", like that means anything. Niggers call each other niggers all the time

No, I'm just not American, or have any kind of contact with africans. Despite this, American culture has penetrated us deep enough to orient our entire English education around "identity", including a large portion on niggers, and their hard felt oppression. Why is that? It's so embedded in the western psyche by now that it's transferred to even near-homogenous communities. It seems to me from the outside that black people, or niggers as I like to call them, must be extremely fragile to form such a complex about it

Don't forget that H.P. Lovecraft hated black people and wrote a poem called "On the Creation of Niggers" guys:

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

Yes, it should be used early and often. In fact, if you don't open the novel by calling the reader a dirty nigger you're probably doing something wrong.
