Modern translations are seen as more reliable than old ones from centuries ago, probably because they'll have more up to date scholarship (the KJV is wonderful but few would argue that it doesn't contain some mistakes). There is, obviously, no need to translate Locke or Hobbes for Anglos and it's obviously better to read the original work when you can. This is the point of recommending modern translations of Plato- the assumption is that you can't read his original words and thus should just find the most accurate and readable translation for the next best thing (note: this is just how most people look at it, I can't comment on which translation of some ancient text is really the most accurate since I don't know any classical languages). Is English not your first language or something?
