Is it true that he was an anti-semite? I have seen some people say this, but to me it doesn't make sense at all considering the themes of his works.

Well I think it really takes away from his message of his books if the author himself didn't follow it

I faced the same problem when I found out he was. There are subtle hints throughout the works (he is also the creator or at least the person that popularized some anti-jewish slurs, though in his works they are not intended as slurs but merely as identifiers).
It's important to note that Dotso's antisemitism is by no means what we know as antisemitism today. He would almost definitely reject 20th century antisemitism and the holocaust. His antisemitism was merely a product of the society, and did not go far beyond a disliking of some peoples (he also disliked Turks, much more than jews).

Yes, it's just that it's just only explicitly expressed at length in his diaries which surprise surprise despite being available in english receive almost no publicity or attention, what a cohencidence if I may say so myself

All Russians at the time were. Tolstoy himself made a few jabs at them in his stories

I don't see why it would be that surprising, he was very patriotic and all that, and a certain degree of what we would now perceive as "antisemitism" by a modern definition (the way he talks about/portrays pollacks in TBK would also probably not fly today) was practically common sense at the time in Russia. He wasn't some kind of proto-Nazi though, if that's what you're thinking.
