I fucking hate these charts. It just puts every book into a list of tags and makes a flow chart from it. They always ask inane questions that don't help you pick anything, like "Prefer a drama?" like what the fuck nobody who wants to read a book has an opinion about that one way or another and every book has drama so now you have to go through both paths trying to figure out which path has more relevant shit and at the end you've learned absolutely nothing and been prescribed nothing. You seriously may as well just pick a random fucking end point on these charts. They are so inane.

I can't speak for much on this chart (print editions and translations are often hard to find) but most of what I've found and read isn't terribly difficult. Unfortunately, tho perhaps unsurprising, the easiest to understand have been far less worth reading.

>The easiest and shortest are A Modest Proposal and Blasted

I'd say, if only for their brevity and entertainment value, they are worth a read. Don't expect too much tho

>All easy but not great or necessarily worth it are American Psycho, Child of God, and The Wasp Factory

I don't consider these terrible (Child of God is well written and The Wasp Factory is hilarious) but they are hard to recommend as outside of shock porn or singular messages/themes, they don't immediately offer much else. You very well may like them tho. (AP is boring shit imo)

Easy and worth time: In the Miso Soup

It's entertaining, plenty of symbols and metaphors to have fun with but none of them are terribly difficult to grasp (also very fun to read when translated to english if you appreciate non-bloat meta humor)

>Difficult and worth it: The Atrocity Exhibition and Story of the Eye

While I consider these difficult relative to the chart, they are managable. AE is experimental and so much fun once you figure it out (Ballard will also explain it to you if you are having trouble or uncertain as well.) It's great.

Story of the Eye is brutal. Not even the most shocking on this list but it sticks in a way something like Blasted doesn't. I can't say I understand it completely (if there is a greater 'something' to be understood) but it's worth reading if only for the images to flash through your head every time you think about champage, priests, bulls, balls, and mental hospitals

Also made it 15 pages into the Piano Teacher and realized it was shit. Read it if you're a teenage girl who still hates her mom

Horror is a genre where I always feel like 'less is more'. Haunting of Hill House is a great little horror novel: it's just about the house, and a couple people staying in it as an experiment; creepy shit happens, climactic ending; and it's done. The series was way too drawn out for me, and they made it all about mental illness. I just felt like bitching, I think.

This is from the wiki, but as it's not really a clear where to start, here's my guide:

Nineteenth Century:
Flaubert - Madame Bovary
Stendahl - The Red and the Black
Hugo (Les Miserables, Notre-Dame de Paris) is very popular, but I'm not a fan and Les Mis is so fucking long I wouldn't start with him.
Dumas (Count of Monte Christo, Three Musketeers) is fun, but more really good genre fic than literature.
(Also check out: Emile Zola, Honore Balzac, Guy Maupassant)

Twentieth Century:
Camus - The Outsider, The Plague, The Fall (in that order)
Proust - Yeah, THAT book. But know that more than any other writer on this list he will suffer from the translation.
Celine - Journey to the End of the Night
Sartre - Nausea (not a fan at all personally)

Not included: playwrights, poets and philosophers.

Leopardi's Moral Dialogues were how I came to love that writer, and the encyclopedic, multi-thousand page Zibaldone - recently translated by FSG, under Jonathan Galassi's excellent stewardship - is a clear window to the mind of one of the deepest and broadest thinkers of his age. we get ruminations on mythology, etymological speculations, personal reflections - an incredible treasure trove
Leopardi's Italian is said to be among the most stylistically impressive, but I can never be sure if it comes through in the translations, so I'd say get the Dialogues and Zibaldone first

I don't see how these can be on the same generic recommendation chart. Haven't read Ego is the Enemy but I'd imagine it espouses the exact opposite of Rand's philosophy.

I made this chart. In hindsight, it's WAY too convoluted. New recommendation would be:
Economics the User's Guide -> Bukharin's ABC of Communism -> The Elgar Companion to Marxist Economics -> Everything else.
What you read from there will then depend on your interest.

Seconding this. Brought me out of long dry spell of not reading anything.
It helped that my knowledge of the Romans was so very, very rusty (if not barely existent) at the time that I was honestly seized with an desire to keep reading to find out what would happen next.
His book of Greek/Persian wars is on my to-read list - according to my dad, who I got both from, it's also a great read though not quite as absorbing as the Roman one.

we don't have much to complain about, desu
most of the world's most important literature has already been translated into English, so it's not like a couple of imperfect efforts and a few minor gaps are going to hurt the overall picture
