P&V of demons and brothers karamazov are both fun as to read. there are some awkward turns of phrase here and there but they definitely capture the tumultuous chaos of his characters' thoughts. Their translation style intuitively seems like it would render the works poorly, but if it works it works I suppose. When ya read a translation you're always reading the translator's style rather than the original author's, p&v dosto vs garnett dosto would have more prose difference than p&v dosto vs p&v tolstoy, so the best a non-native reader can really even hope for is comfy style that illuminates the ideas, pacing, character personalities in the original work with some degree of certitude. Just pick one and read it. Excluding really bad translations, they're all pretty much the same.

For a work like notes from the underground, the genesis of thought in you from reading that book will be similar regardless of which translation you choose. I've read P&V and Garnett of notes and they both get the ideas across with decent clarity.

Although, on sheer comfiness alone, I'd give the nod to garnett over P&V. But that might just because house of the dead and the short stories, the works I've read in garnett translation, are comfier than his long tomes.
