Jews lack the creativity needed to become great writers and poets. Kafka was the exception that proves the rule. Part Jews like Proust and Montaigne were obviously more indebted to their gentile genes.

French was good too, but not English, except maybe poetry and that's probably just because I don't know Russian/French so I can't read their poetry.

Only Hardy and maybe Eliot matches up to the greatest of Russian and French nineteenth century writers.

and Dickens, Austen, Thackeray, Byron, Keats, Mr and Mrs Shelley, the Brontë sisters, Wordsworth, Carroll, Housman, even Wells and Conrad were publishing in the 1890s

the Russian writers are concentrated in an extremely tiny number

Well, I only know Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Gogol, Chekhov and Lermentov
but they're all top tier, better than all the novelists you mentioned except Austen.
And then you've got the great Russian poets as well, but it's useless to talk about those unless you speak Russian which is why I wasn't counting English poets.

Exactly. Even though I can't appreciate the prose properly, they're STILL better than most all English novels.

Are you not mixing up "18th century" with 1800s? Because while I'd agree 19th century/1800s lit is dominated by the French, with Russians at a close second, I can only think of Diderot from the 18th century, where you have the German Romantic writers like Goethe and Schiller who started the movement that defined the first half of the 19th century.

Afaik, the first half the 1800s was dominated by Romanticism, which began in Germany, and the second half was dominated by Realism, which began in France.

Seriously. When I backpacked Europe this summer the Aussies impressed me more than anyone else, sans Russians who were in higher education. The Irish were also chill lads.

The Dutch and the English possessed the least critical thought and always took media and anything remotely progressive sounding at face value.

I was thinking more of Novelists - I'll admit, I don't think of Voltaire or Rousseau as great writers in that sense, but maybe I'd think differently if I read them in French.
I suppose they count, but if we're going for philosophy, you've got early German Idealism too.
