I just read some of the star catalogue of Ptolemy’s Almagest up to the break for Book VIII. It was interesting to see the ‘1’ magnitude stars and know that the rating system continues to be used by astronomers this very day. I’ve been reading The Almagest forever now. It gets a little easier around this part, tbqh

that is an extremely random thing to read, good luck with that

Not really. It was widely influential. The Almagest influenced all of the great Astronomers and scientists.

Besides, have you no heart? Have you not thought to yourself how cool it would be to break out the Almagest at a campfire or something and show your loved one or friends your favorite constellations? Show them Spica in Virgo, or the difference between Ursa Major and Ursa Minor? I mean this is neat stuff man. Astronomy is incredible.

However many pages you want to count Antony and Cleopatra as.

it is neat stuff indeed, personally i prefer pseudoscientific recountings of how the ancients put Orion into their Pyramids because that is the level of intellect we're dealing with where im concerned

i do like trying to spatially visualize the milky way's rings before me in the night sky

20 pages of Seneca's letters on my break at work. Comfy if repetitive and shallow

I’m sorry? The Almagest is not incorrect. Only some parts of it are.

The Star catalogue is 100% accurate, which is why you can show other people constellations with it...

Jesus Christ...

Oh yeah no doubt :/. See I am only vaguely interested in that area. Ptolemy wasn’t very esoteric at all, you would most likely consider it very boring. Certain parts of the Almagest are just plain incredibly difficult anyway. The sections with geometrical representations are fun for me, I love mathematics, but there are a lot of chapters where he just rambles on and on and I know that I wouldn’t be able to comprehend it if I sat there and most of it is just experimental observations.

That being said it was the only book where I’ve been so engaged that I’ve flipped through multiple different pages while reading. I’ve had my fingers in like three different spots within the book once. It is a fucking ride to try to comprehend the thing. Some people spend their whole lives studying it.

I am content with being able to point out stars and constellation locations. That’s cool enough for me :)
