This is one of the most depresing books I've read. It's almost as depresive as I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, but nothing could be more depresing than that.

I don't have the photoshop skills required for this.

>>12055636
Well buck up, because 1984 isn't particularly depressing in the greater oeuvre of lit.

>> No.12055725

>>12055714
Yeah I didn't mean it was a bad book, is just that I thought the ending would be more encouraging than it was. I was left with the sensation that nothing could ever change in that world, and it'll always be a shithole.

>> No.12055729

Read The Outsider (Camus) next.

>> No.12055763

>>12055729
I read him a while ago, maybe I should read him again. Believe it or not, I had a happier time with him than with 1984, at least the guy was about to die in peace right?. In 1984, the protagonist doesn't even die like a martir, or someone who disagreed witht the regime. He just died like an alcoholic fanatic.

>> No.12055765

>>12055612
Why do you say 1984 is depressive?

>> No.12055790

>>12055763
I didn't mean that it would be depressive, but offer a different look on "nothing could ever change in that world, and it'll always be a shithole."
Thinking about it, The Plague may be more suitable.

I'm looking into The Plague, and yeah it offers a very different view on the unchageable nature of existence. I might read it later.

I think The Stranger is more "nothing could ever change in this world, and it'll always be a shit hole, but that's fine"

>> No.12055900

>>12055878
It is, but I still think the "and that's fine" is significant. It's been a while since I read it, but found it strangely comforting.
>>12055816
Also Dosto, especially The Brothers Karamazov. Shows the depths and wretchedness of humanity, but preaches empathy and understanding above all.

That one actually looks even better than He Plague. I'll definitely check it out.

Sounds like you missed the point of the book, which isn't actually the point of the book, only the beginning of the sharpness.

>> No.12057008

All this shit does is discourage me from reading the works and it is a shit way of discussing/criticising and has strayed from what it originally was: a formula for jokes such as the old man and the sea where the expect was a swordfish and the what i got was a swordfish' skeleton.
