For mainstream releases I generally skim the upcoming releases lists that Tor posts on their blog. Thankfully they've started segregating the pulp trash (young adult) stuff into a separate post.

For indie/small press stuff I generally just skim the new releases pages on goodreads and a couple review blogs I've found of people who have similar tastes (or at least are able to look at genre fiction critically instead of going "it had elves! 5/5!"). To a lesser extent I've found stuff through the amazon new releases list, authors promoting each other on twitter/their blogs (eg, the "big idea" guest posts that Scalzi does) and random finds on mobilism.

mutation generally happens more in sci-fi than fantasy. it can be considered both but it depends how the mutation occured. for example genetic experimentation, evolution or parasites would count as sci-fi. anything magic involved would be considered fantasy.
there is also science fantasy. where either or can be the case.
fallout in particular would count as science fiction though.

Hey guys. I am writing a mystery/horror short story taking place in the 21st century that involves the occult. I'm at an impasse as how to end it. Without going into plot details, I'll briefly explain it. Most of the story is based on correspondence by letter. The protagonist is tricked by the writer of the letter to perform a certain task, which leads to the protagonists death for the benefit of the writer. Now I am unsure whether I should end the story explicitly or implicitly. I could make the the writer of the letter appear in person and converse with the protagonist before his demise. But I am more fond of the idea of the writer appearing after the protagonists death, but in such a way that will not be entirely evident to the reader that is the writter appearing, but with heavy implication.

I remember the boy who was probably the main character eating an apple under a tree at one point. And there was lot of castle content. Like exploring the ins and outs of the castle and courtyard or something. I remember I got obsessed with castles for a short while as a kid afterward and read stuff like Redwall which was pretty castly.

The book might be something a teacher would read to an elementary class (I'm not 100% sure but I think that's how I was exposed to it)

Finished "Aurora."

In this book, KS Robinson comes dangerously close to telling an engaging tale, but luckily for the reader, he was reminded to buttress long, meandering chunks of nothing against his trademark unsatisfying resolution.

His writing is rewarding in the sense that I am rewarding myself by never again reading another one of his novels, so I feel a sort of liberation that I imagine is felt by people spared a long, traumatic ordeal, like a released POW.

Still better than "2312."

It's just not done very elegantly. My favorite Lovecraftian stories of his are Notebook Found in a Deserted House, The Shadow from the Steeple, and Terror in Cut-Throat Cove and all of those were written long after Lovecraft's death. The AI developing by virtue of a narrative was as close to a redeeming factor as this thing had, but that's me.

>Devi
Not the worst character, but also a bit overpowered, then again her generation supposed to be a little ahead of the current curve, so she could be a super-engineer.

>Freya
I kept picturing as a fat-titted giant Indian cow, so I had a bit of a soft (hard) spot for her. When they said that she was slow, that was the clincher. Dick status: exploded, and all that; Hot cross-eyed cow-titted Indian moron, hunnnnggggggg!!!

Beyond bloated.
Too much world-building, too little storytelling.
Erikson thinks he's funnier than he actually is.
Entire series reads like it was adapted from an RPG (because it was).
Character motivation and the reason why certain things happened are still left up in the air by the end of the last book (I'm not someone who needs everything explained to them, but if you still have no idea why certain main characters made the decisions they did or why major parts of the story happened then you've fundamentally failed as a writer).
Beyond bloated.

All that being said Erikson does throw a lot of shit at you and a lot does happen, but that's how the entire series feels after a while: shit happening just to happen and lots of stuff happening because EPIC FANTASY XD. Even Erikson admitted he could have trimmed things down.

Malazan is only difficult because you have no fucking idea what's going on for the first book and a half.

It's not as good as reddit or goodreads would have you believe, but it's not nearly as bad as /sffg/ would have you believe. As an anon said previously it's pretty bloated and the characterization is fairly thin, but the world building is excellent and there are some genuine moments of excellent story telling.

Overall a 7/10, higher if you're the kind of person who reads for world building and magic systems.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Euan. He was good. My problem with Freya was that she was a total retard with her one redeeming characteristic being that she like, has heart, man.

I agree with the AI developing being a good driving force in the book, but the focus on it gaining/learning about consciousness and love was just so corny that I couldn't take it seriously. I did really enjoy it learning to create a better narrative as time went on.

For me all that the book had to do was not retread old '50s and '70s sci-fi tropes in a totally lame way and I would have loved it, but Robinson just couldn't avoid that, apparently.

I do love those weird philosophical endings, and things do generally go to shit after you fall in love; but what I liked about Stars was the way the book explored the problem of how a genuinely superior individual managed to endure and navigate a tecnologicall advanced but deeply mediocre society. Our own problem, is it not? Lem's answer--to love one of its members--was not a full answer, you're right. But just posing the question raised it (dare I say) light years above novelized video-game carnage-cum-sjw-icing that passes for sf nowadays.

Remember Stapledon's Star Maker? Now that was sf.
