journals aren't exactly great reads. Back in the early 1900s the writing was very whimsical, the geologists would go for a picnic and say what they had for lunch. I suppose the short length of nature and science makes them succinct and borderline beautiful.

I enjoy perusing medical journals of around the turn of the 20th century. It's remarkable how much more intelligent physicians of that day were than contemporary researchers. You can see the spark of intelligence in their written words. It doesn't matter if they were ignorant as to modern insights of physiology. They had bigger brains and a genuine passion in the material which cannot be said of those today.
