I don't know much about art but I hear Paul Klee was very influential to a lot of writers in the previous century.
What exactly about his work was so inspiring to them?

I was guessing something Russian because I think I recognize the artist, or at least the dark sketch-like way, that Russian novels seem to be often illustrated, like from Ilya Glazunov, who I was correct in thinking this illustration was from. Someone who also came to mind was the late Mstislav Dobuzhinsky (who full disclosure I had to search up to remember) who I remembered made some sketches for Dostoevsky's Demons, particularly the one in the rain, which was memorable for its simple yet expressionist style very befitting for the book, almost like something a child would draw, or a crazed revolutionary with a few blue colored pencils, though compare what he did with an illustration of Wagner's Tannhauser set with presumably similar materials one can immediately see he is no slouch as complexity goes.

I bring him up also because I saw that his artwork was featured on an older Penguin edition of Andrei Bely's symbolist novel Petersburg, which I have read and love. It definitely belongs in the expressionist mode being made in the same period too, and at the same time there is something very striking about, almost horrible to look at. One immediately recognizes it as a bloodstain on a wall, but its immediate violence without a single body in sight is all the more present to the viewer
