Is playing video games immoral for a non-hedonist?

>> No.12008407

Not if you do it because you feel you ought to be challenged, and don't do it because you find it pleasurable. I do it to blow off steam or when I start to get distracted, but I suck so I rarely derive pleasure from it.

You're meant to build up your skills and techniques (typically game-specific), then be increasingly satisfied as you successfully apply those skills and dominate.

Yeah probably. But living non-hedonistically is impossible if you are in a situation where you have the ability to play video games so your question is dumb anyway.

What games do you play?

That's an interesting question because while games can be enjoyed, they also provide challenge. It's definitely not an activity that provides enjoyment like dancing, drinking, having sex ,etc. You make use of your brain to solve whatever problems the game throws at you. If you enjoy challenge, would that be hedonistic simply because you enjoy it? I honestly don't know, that's up to you.

Not all games are truly challenging. Take the design of WoW these days. It’s based on a nostalgia and a series of actions that release dopamine from feeling “success” without really doing anything.

Just as there are great and shit books, but there are great and shit games. I wasted too much of my life on multiplayer games that provide nothing but game specific skills. There were likely many other things I could have done to develop skills like teamwork and critical thinking that were better to develop them.
