how the fuck to break into this industry as a literary patrician who has no interest in pushing a political agenda?

>wanting to become a journalist in 2000+18
Journalism is dead anon.
Suck a Jewish man's dick, he'll give you a job. then write about the orange man and how he's literally Hitler.

It died with the internet, anon. You'd sooner be a Buzzfeed hack than a new Tom Wolfe. The days of vibrant magazines and prestigious papers are dead or dying.

Write essays

Read Gay Talese (“Frank Sinatra has a Cold” is a classic starting point) and look up literary journalism

false. sort of

Find some story to investigate and the funds to investigate it. Or do some scott carrier shit.

That's one option.

The other one is to try to be a reporter for a decent newspaper like WSJ.

Thats gonna suck becuase your just going to cover some business (probably consumer tech) for the first several years until they move you up to politics or lifestyle or something interesting.

I guess I dunno what interests you.

Build up a portfolio of independent work like I did for a year.

I mainly covered happenings around town, both small, like a dispute between neighbors over garbage bins, and large events, like Trump visiting and the riots that ensued. I had around a hundred articles published on my own website complete with photos by the end of the year-long stint, and I even had a few dozen articles taken up by small newspapers too. I'm about to try to use my portfolio to get a job as a copy editor at the largest paper in the state. Wish me luck boys, and good luck to OP too.

Also, any degree is worthless in this profession. I've gotten a lot of work in freelance copy editing, and absolutely none of my employers asked for anything regarding education.

Got a BA in journalism, more importantly I worked a couple of internships and did some freelance work to build up my experience. After that, it was just a lot of resume sending. I sent at least 30 resumes out over a course of like three months before I got my current job. I got it a few months after graduating college in May last year.

You can't. You need to be an ascended brainlet/midwit and at the very least extremely biased to get in, having literary references other than harry potter and the handmaiden tales is a bad thing (and it's a good thing)
