On my second read of BotNS. Baldanders has a dream (in Ch. 15 of Shadow), where he describes "arms dismembered found on sanded paths." What subtle foreshadowing! This reference is also linked to the end of Sev's first dream, in bed with Baldy. He also mentions "things that shook chains in the dark," but I can't remember to what that alludes. Is it Abaia or Erebus, or else one of those types of creatures?

listen, It's not like that. I read old shit and I enjoy it. Read Voyage to Arcturus this year and I really enjoyed it.
But some things just age like milk. I can't say I have a definite theory on this, but some old stuff I've picked up just reeks of this outdated sensibility or something, and I really can't connect with it.

By first one, do you mean the collection of short stories? They set the tone for his setting. I suppose you could skip to The Eyes of the Overworld, which, along with Cugel's Saga, provide a more unified storytelling experience.

Yes, I meant the collection of short stories. The world seems too juicy and radical for a highly dense, scattershot introduction to it. Good to know that you can jump to Eyes, so thank you.

It's aged well, much better than most "swashbuckling" stories. It's one of Vance's better works and Vance is no slouch.

>>12007761
The Dying Earth was Vance's first published full-length SF book. While the setting is both cool and influential, and will help you make a little bit more sense out of the world that other stories are set in, it's pretty roughly put together and ultimately not representative of Vance's developed style.

So yeah, just go ahead and read the next book -- Eyes of the Overworld.

What you really need to understand about Vin is that she had a hard childhood. Is not easy growing up as an urchin girl in the slums of Luthadel. She is a skaa. Like all skaa she has to plow the mills and tend the shrubbery, all the while terrible bits of ash fall from the blackened sky and there's a red sun and really tall mean towers and the lord ruler. Boy oh boy, the lord ruler! I really outdid myself with that guy. Don't forget breeze, and and ham and that guy who smokes. In addition to kelsier these are all really well rounded characters. wait, what do you mean she made stone soup?

was she cooking those creatures that look like rocks with organs inside? was she heating the stones up and dropping them in the broth to heat it? was she leeching some kind of salt edible mineral out the rocks by boiling it?

I have a hard time believing she actually made soup out of rocks, but only the first one seems plausible and I thought I remembered something about those tasting like soap

This. She boiled onions and garlic and whatever else beforehand. Then took some sea stones, put them in the pot and boiled it. Then she took out the stones, place them in the soup bowls (4 stones and 4 bowls for four persons), put some olive oil on each stone, place a sprig of some herb on each stone, then ladled the broth over the stone, and the meal was complete.

Bakker's got some great shit. >but I feel like the movie explores different themes and ideas than the original novel,
Ya dude. The director hated the book. Heinlein wrote a militaristic utopia and Verhoeven having remembered a bit of Nazi germany was not a fan to say the least. He didn't finish reading the book out of disgust. So he made a satire piece. This has really gone over the heads of a lot of people who enjoy the material at face value. Sorry to tell you son, you're rooting for an off-brand hitler. The uniforms, the hairdos, the self-assurance, the VERY BLATANT propaganda. Those are all Verhoeven making fun of the Nazis.

Of course they were already part-way into making the thing by the time they ironed out the rights to the book so who knows how much the book actually plays into any aspect of the movie.

So what you're looking for a fascist or nationalistic military story. Possibly an over-the-top satire thereof. Heinlein's other works aren't going to float your boat at all. He wrote a liberal utopia and a libertarian utopia as well. His early work was alright, but he went bonkers later in life.

My first knee-jerk reaction was in fact Forever War, even though it's pretty different philosophically. But you already went there.

There was a LOT of semi-readable sci-fi that were bad euphamisms for the Vietnam war. People wrote about what they knew, and it was pretty traumatic. Steakley's "Armor" is one of the better ones. Like... the 70's and 80's are full of them. You just need to find the ones written by people who enjoyed their time in Vietnam.

A Mote in God's Eye has.... a different take on the military. Might be up your alley. Way more pluralistic society, so that's probably not what you're looking for.

I've heard good things about Vatta's War.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CoDominium The Codominium series looks like it gets into a similar set of militarism politics..... although I'm not sure it's going to have the same flavor as to CoDominium eventually crumbles under nationalism. Oh hey, the Moties are from this series. Go figure. Yeah, give something on that list a try.

Yes Prince of Thorns chronicles the adventures of young Jorg, a badass teenage psychopath and like most adolescents, he is written to be cringy on purpose. Everything in Mark Lawrence's fantastic fantasy novels are written with intent and purpose. There are many fun moments as I'm sure you recall, like when he bent a few town whores over beers with the boys (that one caused quite the uproar LOL) and the time that Jorg knocked over his father's shitmas tree (silly christians) or when he fought all those wicked awesome ghosts! There's more to those ghosts than meets the eye so be sure to sign up for the Broken Empire Trilogy forums to discuss the deep lore with other fans of the breathtaking series and keep up with Mark Lawrence's many epic novels set in the same world. There's plenty of other cool moments after that of course but I don't want to spoil one of the best plot twists in history so I'll keep those cool cards to my chest. I hope you'll enjoy the rest of my series

Finished Three Body Problem. Kind of disappointing honestly, it's mostly just 400 pages of setup. I also realized that hard Sci-Fi is not to my liking.
I'm now in this weird spot where I kind of want to see where the plot goes next, but not enough to read through two more books featuring walls of dry scientific exposition. Oh well.

I guess I can understand the reason behind all this shrill insecurity. You are just unaccustomed to Wolfe's big literary dick. You crack open the book, you start reading and almost instantly get slapped with his writing schlong in the face.
It's those heavy meaty slaps across your face as you read that make you all flustered.
Compared to Wolfe, reading other authors was akin to getting your face pushed into testosterone engorged clits. The difference in quality can really make you feel small and insecure.
