On my second read of BotNS. Baldanders has a dream (in Ch. 15 of Shadow), where he describes "arms dismembered found on sanded paths." What subtle foreshadowing! This reference is also linked to the end of Sev's first dream, in bed with Baldy. He also mentions "things that shook chains in the dark," but I can't remember to what that alludes. Is it Abaia or Erebus, or else one of those types of creatures?

listen, It's not like that. I read old shit and I enjoy it. Read Voyage to Arcturus this year and I really enjoyed it.
But some things just age like milk. I can't say I have a definite theory on this, but some old stuff I've picked up just reeks of this outdated sensibility or something, and I really can't connect with it.

The Dying Earth was Vance's first published full-length SF book. While the setting is both cool and influential, and will help you make a little bit more sense out of the world that other stories are set in, it's pretty roughly put together and ultimately not representative of Vance's developed style.

So yeah, just go ahead and read the next book -- Eyes of the Overworld.

What you really need to understand about Vin is that she had a hard childhood. Is not easy growing up as an urchin girl in the slums of Luthadel. She is a skaa. Like all skaa she has to plow the mills and tend the shrubbery, all the while terrible bits of ash fall from the blackened sky and there's a red sun and really tall mean towers and the lord ruler. Boy oh boy, the lord ruler! I really outdid myself with that guy. Don't forget breeze, and and ham and that guy who smokes. In addition to kelsier these are all really well rounded characters. Now who wants to suck my cock for a gummy bear?

It makes sense that the people most dissatisfied with the world would try to write about more promising or at least more interesting future worlds.
Fantasy is often used as a coping mechanism for people that can't live in the real world or refuse to.

Essentially, they're just edgy autists that live inside their heads too much and as a consequence invent some cool stuff sometimes.

You can try Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold. Solid paladin books.
Keep in mind Paladin of souls is slow af though. Start with Chalion.

Yeah they weren't that good, but I've never really found any novels that focus on paladins. I guess when I pick up fantasy I think more along the lines of D&D or whatever, rather than what is actually being written.

Hi /sffg/ this might seem like a weird question, but is there a novelisation of the movie Starship Troopers? I know it's based off an old Heinlein novel (which I've read) but I feel like the movie explores different themes and ideas than the original novel, and I'm interested in reading a book centered around those ideas. I've already read the 'Forever War' series. Any suggestions?

Bakker's got some great shit. The scifi fantasy mix is exemplified in White-Luck Warrior, with a plausible (if a bit overlarge) antique army fighting a swarming opponent that makes realistic decisions based on decentralized processes like quorum sensing. Really it should be the most generic armies of the west vs. orcs thing ever, but it manages to be some of the best stuff in fantasy.

Finished Three Body Problem. Kind of disappointing honestly, it's mostly just 400 pages of setup. I also realized that hard Sci-Fi is not to my liking.
