if you're a jew (middle class jew) or you female or you live in non-flyover-USA, all you have to do is exist.

Everyone else gets a useless degree of any kind, writes a bunch of thinkpieces that fit in politically as propaganda with the mag of choice, it should be easy to read and devoid of sub-text.

Depends, if you have other prospect's to peruse you can do this part time. plenty of magazines/ websites and have contributor programs (Huntington did until a while ago) where they'll either republish nonsense from you website / blog, or just take in themed article through submittable.( that's how those top-10-whatever's get written)

A slightly more dignified , up-market option is to write out long form essays/ reviews / critiques / opinion-pieces and to then shop around looking for an interested party. Here again you'll be submitting online, emailing publications, or even sending out regular old fashioned mail and then waiting 4 to 5 month's for a response.

Reputation ( or influence, ugh ... ) is they key.
One's you've got a you'r foot in the door, it gets a little easier but you'll have a hell of a time getting started. Twitter's , Facebook's and Website's help with that.

I know a girl -- the most delightfully ordinary person -- that sometimes writes for the newyorker as a hobby, and even get payed to go on safari and other such assignments .

No, you only need a degree in order to know and get accepted into the liberal circle which dominates the mainstream published media. You don't have to know extensive journalism. American university education is only important for meeting with the right people.
