An episodic novel told through a series of vignettes of a psychiatrist/therapist having therapy sessions with their clients. It quickly becomes evident that the therapist, as well as the clients, are not human but are machines. They meet in a virtual therapy session represented by human avatars.

The machines have a variety of problems they hope to be addressed in this robotherapy, usually randing from existential crisis related to their programmed task and a lack of fulfillment from their chosen design.

The last patient is a machine who was designed to create new types of printers who went rogue and wiped out or enslaved all of humanity. Now that it has achieved what it though would be a higher purpose, it now finds itself falling into depression and melancholy.

I could also do some cutesy shit like have firmware patches and things like that replace SSRIs and some machines choosing bizarre avatars like goats or trees or Bart Simpson.

Based on that, all your ideas probably suck so you have nothing to lose. Pick one and start writing, then you'll be good enough one day to have actual good ideas.

Ideas are cheap, everyone has them, it's execution that's the hard part.

Aliens invade the planet and take over all human governments. They decide to be benevolent rulers and want to legitimately help humanity rise up and elevate as a species. They allow freedom of expression, respect our rights, and have a generally hands-off approach to their rule. They work with us to build a kind of utopian society.

The only drawback is that they find our pornography disgusting and depraved. They ban all forms of porn other than missionary man on woman. They crack down on porn with an iron fist; they immediately ban and arrest anyone watching foot fetish, step sister, anime, etc... etc...

An underground movement forms dedicated to producing and selling this pornography, which grows into a resistance of fighters who united in a resistance movement centered around their fondness for fetish porn of various stripes.

Eventually their efforts prove fruitful and they actually succeed in causing enough of a disruption to get the aliens to abandon their effort and leave in a huff. Humanity is then left to rot on this planet with our filthy porn.

The main character is your normal wagecuck dude living 9 to 5 and suffering in his cubicle. He works for a souless corporation that doesn't respect him as a human nor as a man, and when he goes home all he can do is drink, masturbate, and play video games.

One night he hears a voice calling from outside. When he steps out, he find's his neighbor's dog. The dog tells him in secret that he is not the man he thinks he is, and that he is actually a kind of ubermensch, a savior who will break the world free of the hands that bind it. He explains to him that forces inside the government wiped his memory when he came too close to exposing the truth about various topics and taking them down. The dog tells him that he is destined to lead a resistance against the government.

Before he runs off to shit in a bush, the dog tells him that he's constantly being watched, and that he has a transmitted in his head that suppresses his true potential. The protagonist goes inside and cuts a transmitter out from behind his ear.

Over the next few weeks he notices people watching him, helicopters flying overhead, breaking into his house and planting shit. He grows suspicious of his employers, and finds them having a satanic meeting in the conference room where they are chanting incantations to bring demons to this planet.

These events escalate, and he continues to meet the dog every night. The dog tells him to keep his cool and wait for the promised day. The protagonist starts seeing coded messages in everyday life, like his mind has been gradually unlocked, and he starts to see the truth behind the world. All of it is centered around one man, a local news anchor for his city. He becomes obsessed with this individual, whom he comes to believe is his "negative", his opposite, a man created to balance out his greatness.

Things grow more dangerous. He purchases a gun. He keeps seeing increasing cult activity around his home. Men in black suits come up to his home. He starts to suspect his wife has been kidnapped and killed, that she's been replaced with an impostor.

A comet explodes in the sky over his home. He takes this as the sign that the time has come. He rushes with the gun to the news anchor's home; with the destruction of his negative, he can become whole again, and start his revolution.

His assassination attempt fails, and he is involved in a high speed chase with police. He is apprehended and sent to a psychiatric unit.

He is diagnosed with schizophrenia and is placed on antipsychotic medications. He recovers after a couple weeks and is sent home. His charges with the police are dropped, but he cannot have a gun anymore.

He returns to his life, and his feelings of melancholy return as he falls back into the familiar cycle.

One night the dog starts talking to him again. It is revealed that he stopped taking his medication, choosing instead to live inside the world of his delusion rather than continue in the reality he built for himself.

Earth is going to shit: superstorms, deserts, famine, war, etc. Most people live in megacities b/c outside it's environmentally hostile and a Mad Max world outside. Some people in space, in station-communities, a permanent but small colony on Mars, and in an exclusive club in orbit run by an AGI.

Robot's eliminated enough work to make people bored, and people often lose themselves in VR worlds or take their chances outside because the the future sucks and civilization peaked a while ago.

MC is lucky enough to live in a space station and spends their time treasure hunting IRL for anyone who can pay. Mostly scavenging for rare art, historical artifacts, fancy alcohol, and shit for rich fucks. Secretly they're searching for a purpose in life and are hoping that by looking for things that other people value, they might find a meaning in everything for themself.

They get answers ranging from suicide to hedonism, but yearn for something deeper or greater in the face of a vast and empty universe and an Earth winding-down.

Robots eliminating work and the whole famines and wars. Plus the Mad Max shit and hostile environment and fleeing into VR. The latter would be just unlikely on the earth in the state it supposed to be.

Something like robots owned by a few powerful individuals who fucked off from earth, messing up the entire economy, making employing people obsolete while syphoning out the last resources in a dying world, would make more sense IMO.

So you'd have:
>fucked up world full of poorfags who take their chances in a world run by robots and superstorms
>richfags who chill out in VR or do the scavenging shit for kicks

Also suicide would be pretty unlikely on earth, given how humanity been through a lot of shit already. Ennui is much more likely to lead to it than living on a fucked planet.

I appreciate the comments, anon. You make good points, and have given me some things to think about.

The famine and wars are mostly tied to consequences of climate change, like the aforementioned storms and desertification, and are more of a context for "present day" than something depicted. The rush to produce a robotic luxury society came from that, and things just went wrong along the way. The Rich and Powerful doing their thing, essentially.

Side note, the AGI-run utopia in orbit is an actual utopia, but it's hard to get to thanks to travel outside the cities being so difficult, and it only lets in people who aren't fucko's. It has plans of its own that are bigger than the daily lives on people, but that's not explored in this story. It mostly just keeps to itself. There are groups of people who resent the seeming unattainability of it all, as well as the existence of an Artificial General Intelligence itself, and desire to destroy it and the space-habitat if they can. The AI acts as a stand-in for God that people can direct their hate towards, and blame for their lot in life. The utopia represents an ideal world just out of reach, and angry people are more like to destroy something beautiful than do something productive about their own situation.

I'm not well-read in philosophy—I mostly just read wiki pages because actually getting into and reading up on all the schools of thought is an investment in time I just don't have at this point in my life—but I was a bit inspired by Camus and his solutions to the absurd, and how a potential future would react to a new existential dilemma and the (what is seem as) inevitable collapse of global civilization. The distinct lack of aliens on top of everything else has convinced a lot of the population that the Earth will not make it through the Great Filter, and there is no glorious sci-fi future waiting for them.

I figure people might react with rage-quitting, nihilism, escapism (VR being an ultimate escape, but keeping that for richfags is something to consider), indulgence, revolt, defiance, etc.

I haven't decided if there's a specific meaning or solution I want to express by the end, I'm not really an outliner. But the MC certainly isn't satisfied with any of them, and inside themselves are mostly raging against the scale of the universe, the untold billions or trillions of years ahead that will be unseen and untouched by any life, the pointlessness of it all, and the lacking of a grand function or nature to creation. I don't know how MC will feel, or think, or do by the end.

Ah, no wonder it resonated with me then.

>AGI-run utopia in orbit is an actual utopia
Not sure it's a good idea, given how the word means different things for different people, unless it's treated as utopia in universe to avoid the potential "fuck the writer, the utopia actually sounds like shit." Maybe I just read it wrong after half a bottle of vodka.

>The AI acts as a stand-in for God that people can direct their hate towards, and blame for their lot in life.
Pretty sweet.

>VR being an ultimate escape, but keeping that for richfags is something to consider
Wouldn't some of them want to turn the earth into a playground for their fantasies too, say some real version of Civilisation or Total War; kinda as a mix of indulgence, nihilism and escapism.

>But the MC certainly isn't satisfied with any of them, and inside themselves are mostly raging against the scale of the universe, the untold billions or trillions of years ahead that will be unseen and untouched by any life, the pointlessness of it all, and the lacking of a grand function or nature to creation.
Yeah, I ran into something similar too, without solving it either, and generally as someone who loves to plot, it's something I kept open, since working towards the unknown is more fun. Though my main conflict is a tiny bit more grounded and the MC "only" tries to destroy and rebuilt society and actively not worrying about super long term stuff; but gets stuck since the planned solution would only lead to a temporary benevolent dictatorship, making it feel pointless. Of course the easy solution would be just to finish them off before they get to do anything but it's kinda a cop out.
Or you could let the key characters present their contrasting solutions/viewpoints and see where it goes. In the end you're not writing a self-help book, so raising the questions and hinting the potential answers isn't too bad, as long some other aspects of the story can provide closure.

This sounds very good anon. My only comment for now would be that whether or not the AGI station is actually utopian should be left vague, with different hints and red herrings pointing to opposite conclusions, because it would be cooler as the reader to have a similar sense of mystery surrounding it.
