A man goes to a 1950s style diner and discovers that in it is actually a portal to the 1950s. He decides that he's going to go to the diner and travel back in time to the 1950s and stay there until he can stop JFK's assination. When he returns to his present time the world is destroyed by nuclear holocaust. He then must go back in time to prevent himself from preventing JFK's assassination, all the while struggling from radiation poisoning that he picked up from the fucked up future.

it's actually a story that King wants to do.

You could try a classic western set in some sort of fantasy-laced, postapocalyptic steampunk universe.

Oh, and include some sort of epic journey that includes characters from your other books and stories as major parts of the plot, and ends with a fuckawesome, pan-dimensional battle for the existence of Everything.
