so /lit/ i was wondering where you all think a book begins?
does it begin with the title?
the first word or even letter of the 'body' of the text?
the first moment an author puts a pen to paper, or types on a computer?
the moment an idea forms in an authors mind?
the moment the inspiration forms?
or maybe from the authors childhood, the experiences that shape them into the writer they are?
maybe a book begins at an authors birth?
when they become self-aware maybe?
maybe a book truly begins with other books, books that have influenced the author? or even begins with these pre-dating book authors.
maybe it begins after the final editing process?

tl;dr
when does a book begin for you /lit/?
let's get some serious discussion going here, on the nature of the creative process or some shit.

pic unrelated, but awesome.

>> No.1197893

For me, personally, it's the title.

>> No.1197895

A book is the physical object, I think.
A story begins at the title.

Also, Dale Cooper is awesome.

i was going to say text but didn't want it to turn into examples of text without titles etc, or what constitutes as a text

basically i mean a novel or liteary work

>> No.1197902

It begins on the first word of the first page, not counting the foreword, preface, prologue or introduction.

>> No.1197906

the book begins when you first hear about it and what others say about it. the very idea.

then we go on to the size of the book, how it looks, etc.

So... when it begins as a work-in-progress? As a writer, I feel like the "book" (or text or literary work, etc.) begins the moment I have that one scene, or image, or idea in my head. It's already there, in its entirety, and it's my job to physically manifest it.

>> No.1197916

Also, post more Dale Cooper.

Holy shit Brownbear you actually posted a worthwhile thread. You still don't know what the difference between 'book' and 'text' is and which one you should be using though :(

Anyway, and I think this is Hegel, every beginning has to have a beginning. Beginnings can be stretched into an endless regress, we are simply left to ourselves and pragmatic considerations as to where we want the cut-off point to be. This is a lazy answer.

>> No.1198007

To be clear, this is hegel

what comes after isn't

yeah i was going to say text but didn't want to get people talking about what constitutes a text.

we were talking about narration or something in a seminar and the guy mentioned the exposition of a text, then someone asked where does a text begin so i thought i'd post this here on /lit/

also: more dale cooper.
that gum he likes is coming back into style

you should leave /lit/, because you are a bad fucking poster. stop phrasing all your points in the most annoying pretentious way fucking possible, for god's sake (even though i basically agree with your point, you say it in a way that's unbearable)

u mad?

>> No.1198628

a book begins with an idea
that idea gets tossed around, tested, amplified, modified, and finally reduced to writing, then to re-writing, then editing, then re-writing, etc., then published
the title is the last thing, not the first thing

just don't be such an annoying tit all the time, that's all i'm asking. you're fucking unbearable. talk about whatever high level shit you want to, that's all well and good, i like that. you're a smart guy and you have contributions to make, if you weren't a dick all the time.

>> No.1198650

A book doesn't have a beginning. Stories have beginnings, narratives have beginnings, but books are objects (both in the physical and conceptual sense). They simply exist.
