Get Personal Memoirs by Ulysses S. Grant. It's about how Grant and his guys destroyed the South militarily. For a war leader it has a rare note of humane modesty towards the deservedly vanquished, and more strikingly its straightforward language.

"What General Lee’s feelings were [upon surrender] I do not know. As he was a man of much dignity, with an impassible face, it was impossible to say whether he felt inwardly glad that the end had finally come, or felt sad over the result, and was too manly to show it. Whatever his feelings, they were entirely concealed from my observation; but my own feelings, which had been quite jubilant on the receipt of his letter, were sad and depressed. I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse. I do not question, however, the sincerity of the great mass of those who were opposed to us ..."

Too narrow it down a bit, any good books about Iraq or Afghanistan? Doesn't even have to be the current wars.

This is a very good one. It's still taught today.

for war in general, read Clausewitz immediately. For COIN, read Galula's books (Counterinsurgency Theory and Practice, and Pacification in Algeria) and and then Kilcullen's books and such. And read Abu Muquwama, Small Wars Journal, CNAS, etc. for the current blogosphere type things. Honestly, if you really want a reading list for COIN stuff, just go to Abu Muqawama and read through their archives and take note of the people Exum mentions.

Try Robert Fisk's "Great War for Civilisation". It's about the Middle East and goes into a lot of history, mostly in regards to the present mess (written 2005). This >>1197018 sounds interesting too.

Anon asked:

>any good books about Iraq or Afghanistan?

I replied with a 1400 page book about the last fifties years in Iraq and Afghanistan by a notable and very active journalist, which necessarily goes into the subject of counterinsurgency and warfare in general. Apparently you find something wrong here.

more his complete and total lack of crediblity or expertise, but yeah, i suppose that falls under the category of 'something that he's said'

What exactly compromises his credibility or expertise on the subjects raised in this thread? Other than being, say, critical in his work I mean.

>What exactly compromises his credibility or expertise on the subjects raised in this thread?

the fact that he doesn't really display any? robert fisk, at this point, doesn't know he shit, he consistently gets shit wrong, he is in general not a trustworthy source or commentator on the middle east. incredibly unreliable. the thing that compromises his credibility is his lack of commitment to fact-checking, research, understanding critical issues, etc.
