Let's discuss the mind/body problem and Cartesian Dualiasm.

Does the mind exist separately from the body or are they the same thing?

Philosophise!

How can the mind exist seperatelt of your body? It's your fucking brain.

>> No.1195530

The mind is simply an extension of the body created by stimulation of chemical codes and C fibres firing. Cartesian Dualism is pretty hard to fuck with however without to resorting to the syntax of the principle of the inter-substitutivity of co-referring salve veritate.

Then where does the idea of mind come from? Why is emotional pain, e.g. related to loss of a loved one, exist if there is no physical stimulation involved in it?

I don't know what's going on in this thread right now, but I read some interesting stuff about how, in many ways, the mind acts directly on bodily impulses (they sometimes dictate what you feel and think). Example:
You walk into a room and find a dead person lying on the floor. You feel nauseous and a tightening of the stomach. These are sensations that are induced instinctively in your body as you see the dead thing. But it actually takes the mind longer than the body to realize what you're seeing, so the tight feeling you get in your stomach when you see something like this, is your body's instinctive reaction to the sight (straight from the eyes to the gut). Your mind then reacts to this bodily impulse and "recognizes" what it means, which causes you to get a feeling of disgust and horror.

self consciousness is a reward thrown up by your body for carting it around and giving it the relatively scarce resources it needs to survive. Emotional pain has a survival benefit for the species because what else wouldn't exist if emotional pain didn't exist? Think of the kinds of social units necessary to bring a human baby to adulthood. Think that way.

Decartes possessed a lack of modern knowledge of the brain. It's why most people are monists now. Thus Dualism is shit regardless of the magical hand waving that Decartes had to use to pass off his philosophy as being real and justified.

>Then where does the idea of mind come from?

Self-concious beings needed a name for the constant stream of thoughts in their heads.

>Why is emotional pain, e.g. related to loss of a loved one, exist if there is no physical stimulation involved in it?

Mirror neurons ---> Empathy --> Grief. Whoopty doo.

You receive the information through a physical stimulus, i.e. someone telling you your mother has died. Then your brain processes this information you receive, and reacts in a way it is genetically and socially taught to. The awareness of you possessing a mind is just your brain being powerful enough to piece together a lot of information and realizing its existance.

hot damn I see a lot of unhappy people in this thread :(

I guess that's what happens when you don't believe in the mind/soul as a package of non-physical material linked to your physical body and is synchronised to your physical actions by God

Actually it's pretty commonsensical when you think about it. Most of us at heart are irrational, sensual creatures given to fantasy (ego), it's kind of a uncomfortable necessity that we need reason (superego).

BUT IF WE ARE SIMPLY PHYSICAL BEINGS AND THE BRAIN IN A VAT, EVIL DEMON, DREAM STATE OR CLOSED BELIEF SYSTEM IS THEORETICALLY APPLIED TO THIS PROBLEM THEN HOW CAN WE SAY WE EXIST? WHO WAS PHONE?
