Do you read one book at a time, or switch books between readings?

I have a minimum of one fiction and non-fiction always in the works. More realistically I have 5+ books I've started and progress through slowly.

When I was young, I read whatever (simple fiction, odd non-fiction). I can clearly remember a time-or-two when I had four books going. This was (is, read on) my natural way to learn. This continued of necessity during secondary and tertiary education (harder stuff), but with less joy. During later 20s (hateful work) a long period ensued in which I completed almost no books, and felt scummy about it. I tried limited times to focus ideally on some single work, and nothing got done.

Happily, over the past four years or so I've really started reading again. Unironically, /lit/ has had a lot to do with this. I do best when I bounce back-and-forth between two-to-four things at various intervals. This, because I build unexpected connections, which reinforce memory and understanding.

I provide a very simple example. "The Coming Insurrection" was probably written by the Tarnac Nine. This same group of defendants cited Lautréamont (a /lit/ namedropper) multiple times in one of their documents. I had a vague awareness of both, but now that I've read both, I can relate them.

A lot of people post this pic and make fun of the guy, but he's just reading a self-help Christian book while checking the Bible for references.

That's a diligent reader, and we should aspire to be like him.

yeah, i mean it looks stupid on a subway, I'll admit, but its completely normal to have a primary text and a secondary text open for consultation when reading. Again, however, this is usually done at a desk and not on the fucking subway, but hey.

I usually have one fiction and non-fiction book on the go at one time so I can switch between the two depending on how I feel. Sometimes they're complimentary, sometimes completely unrelated.

Am currently reading Magician by Raymond Feist and Eastern Approaches by Fitzroy MacLean.
