Thoughts?

A pretty boring and dated read with a few moments of profound thought. Dialogue form is also pretty stale when it consists entirely out of yes-men.

Thank God this has paved the road for Aristotle's Politics, which is one of the deepest works in political philosophy ever written.

It was alright for me
some boring when the discourse pertaining the roles of guardians and there state. but some intersting parts i.e. interesting on justice, the education of philosophers/rulers part, the cave, role of women and so on just the pages from 100-220 starts getting good... seems like hit and miss for me

I have a problem with the whole idea of needing noble lies for society function, indeed, needing noble lies for even something as essential as justice to exist.

It seems peculiar that one of our greatest thinkers thought it was necessary to construct something that was untrue in order for society to work. Such a society seems by definition unstable and prone to corruption.

Nothing about the content of the "noble lie" is said to be false, the only falsity is in the mode of expression of the truth it is to convey. If you warn a child about entering a dark alleyway by telling him that monsters are hiding there, at the end of the day you are teaching him something truthful.

Some really good parts, love when they talk about Forms and the Divided Line, Cave, etc.
But everything else was a struggle to get through, took me months to finish simply because I could barely make it through 10 pages a day without my mind wandering off

I love all his other dialogues, but for a larger work I think Aristotles way of writing is better
