In what parts of the books do Harry's actions have a relevant impact on the story? It looks like he is guided or bailed out of jail by other people a lot.

On a side-note: what are some (possibly good) stories where what looks like the protagonist is more of a spectator?

I felt this about The Great Gatsby, and it annoyed me. Like Gatsby was the proper protagonist and the protag existed only to observe and reveal him for the reader.
