I'm thinking about taking the math pill. I've been interested in philosophy for years, but I've put off the mathematics and advanced logic underpinning much of it for too long. Does anyone have any reading recommendations or other resources to help me along?

>> No.11898790

With the hardcore math books it's just best to read the source books and slowly follow the logic. Start with either Freges foundation of arithmetic or Russel's Principles of mathematics (different than the Principia Mathematica)

Don't do it.

Mathematical logic is a cancer that consumes all who partake in it until you get to the point where you seriously try to derive mathematical equations explaining love and morality.

>> No.11898903

the "philosophy of math" is an epsilon-fraction of the depth and complexity that actual pure mathematics has to offer. vast universes of structures interwoven by theorems, clever results, and reformulations. math is a language. pick up "Intro to Mathematical Thinking" if you truly want to learn about math and not be a pseud that "knows about math".

Spinoza is a victim of mathematical logic; don't glorify his dark and tragic past.

Spinoza is one of the most life-affirming philosophers there is, he is the farthest thing from dark and tragic.

You never see Spinozists talking about how awful everyone who doesn't agree with them is, because unlike romantics they have their emotions under control.

What a lie. They bitch constantly about the degenerate romantics. Their emotions are autistically inverted, because they aren't allowed an outward expression. If you question their paradigms efficiently the autistic rage is breathtaking.

Bayes theorem is all you need. Literally all you need, literally all that is needed. Every other mathematical concept is patently false.

Which one/by who?

>> No.11900777

Learn it from textbooks and find your own interpretation.

Just go to your local library, rent a book on whatever subject you're interested in and read about it.

Worst idea.

Learn mathematics from it in action. It’s so much more exciting.

Learn Set Theory as Von Neumann uses it in Game Theory.

Learn about Hessians and second-order partial derivatives as they are used by Pareto.

Learn about basic geometrical relations and the foundations of modern trigonometry and Algebra from Euclid and Ptolemy in their Elements I and II and Almagest I.

Learn about things as they are used! That is the way to go!

The math pill only leads to insanity once you realize the foundations of mathematics are a bunch of irresolvable contradictions.

>> No.11902296

>>11898695
Take the physicalism pill instead. Math by itself is useless for describing reality (or anything except math). You need a model and a set of rules of how you map your model to reality, and then you can use math to make your model produce some answers. The art of constructing and manipulating models is physics.

Reason What It Is
When a man Reasoneth, hee does nothing els but conceive a summe totall, from Addition of parcels; or conceive a Remainder, from Substraction of one summe from another: which (if it be done by Words,) is conceiving of the consequence of the names of all the parts, to the name of the whole; or from the names of the whole and one part, to the name of the other part. And though in some things, (as in numbers,) besides Adding and Substracting, men name other operations, as Multiplying and Dividing; yet they are the same; for Multiplication, is but Addition together of things equall; and Division, but Substracting of one thing, as often as we can. These operations are not incident to Numbers onely, but to all manner of things that can be added together, and taken one out of another. For as Arithmeticians teach to adde and substract in Numbers; so the Geometricians teach the same in Lines, Figures (solid and superficiall,) Angles, Proportions, Times, degrees of Swiftnesse, Force, Power, and the like; The Logicians teach the same in Consequences Of Words; adding together Two Names, to make an Affirmation; and Two Affirmations, to make a syllogisme; and Many syllogismes to make a Demonstration; and from the Summe, or Conclusion of a syllogisme, they substract one Proposition, to finde the other. Writers of Politiques, adde together Pactions, to find mens Duties; and Lawyers, Lawes and Facts, to find what is Right and Wrong in the actions of private men. In summe, in what matter soever there is place for Addition and Substraction, there also is place for Reason; and where these have no place, there Reason has nothing at all to do.
