Americans aren't raised to perceive literature as anything more than an inconvenient time waster to get a good grade in English. Few people read for pleasure, and if they do, it's pop-lit or the young adult fiction they read when they were teenagers. I do believe there is a greater mainstream acceptance of intellectualism and literature in Europe, where people have deeper roots to the writers and source material and less of a fixation over "working hard" by droning on at work for 8 hours and returning home to gaze at the TV or computer for another 2-3 before bed. Or you know, it's selective editing and Russians aren't that smart as you would think.

I think they read out of habit, not "intelligence". A lot of Russians probably can't afford expensive consumer electronics and entertainment, so picking up a book is a good way to kill time there. There's also the cultural pride aspect from the Golden Age of Russian literature.
