They have a self promotion thread going on r/fantasy but what I'm talking about is their self published book review system. It's called Tbrindr I think google it, basically there's a list of bunch of voluntary reviewers, you can give one of them your book if they're available and they'll read it then review it and post it on Reddit, some of them even have blogs so it gets posted there too.

>> No.11889150

>>11889041
The way I pictured it initially, it would begin with an act of charity that unexpectedly leads to conflict that further entangles them in matters, but that already sort of echoes the previous part of the book so I'm not sure I want to repeat it

What I do see is that the story has to begin in the spice market becuase the characters aren't wandering heroes, they're just wandering foodies.

I'm going to go out and come back. I think I can figure something out on my way to the store

Somehow, the last one, were one of the most anticipated books to me. the second one really drove me nuts with the ending and the overall relationship between that pedo and his loli. So i was looking for a tie-in or even a explanation of what really happened to artyom.

But, to be honest, the last books somehow lacks that sense of "answer" that was pointing to. I mean, out of nowhere suface military and completely fuctional cities where found and you where like, wtf. And the explanation given to it doesnt help that much.

To me, the best thing that could happen to Artyom would be his dead and make a new character for this one (Or use Homero instead) But no.

Its a decent book and i like it much, but somehow this didnt hook me as much as the first two.

Alright, I haven't read anything for three years because I was a useless Neet, but read plenty of fantasy in my youth, a lot of it not from English-speaking authors though. I now want to pick things up again, which series should I start with? I don't trust the generally recommended stuff from reddit and goodreads, I've only read ASOIAF and everything from Tolkien from their various top 20 lists, they would probably tell me to read Malazan or stuff from Sanderson next. Are the books in the selected list from this thread superior or is it just assumed that you've already read the usually recommended stuff?

So in short, please give me something to read bros, I really want to get back into it and don't know who to trust. Preferably something that is not full of antiheroes and grimdark shit, but more inspiring and moving.

What are some actually good rise to power/rags from riches stories where the hero saves the day and gets the girl. Yes, a very classic trope, but that's exactly why many works tend to avoid it nowadays.

Good example: Tad Williams, Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, starts out with a literal kitchen boy who becomes a righteous hero and gets a nice girl >>11891325

So, I've just finished rereading Baudolino by Eco. Does it count as fantasy? I don't care, I just want to talk about it.
It used to be among my favorite novels before, but now I can safely say it is THE favorite.
My favorite game is Baldur's Gate 2, and I've just realised maybe that's why I liked the book so much. Both have a medieval setting, a party of adventurers, strange, mythological creatures, religious themes, and a room(s) full of weird devices.

i think the reason why people who like anime/manga can stomach it is because those female heroes don't pretend to be realistic, and outside of their heroism they tend to be very girly characters, which makes it much more believable. Like the fantasy super hero magical girl stuff is absurd anyway and suspension of disbelief is not a problem there so let's go all out on that, and they can be perfectly normal girls in their day-to-day lives. A lot of western stuff tries so hard to seem real that it your suspension of disbelief is broken. It's the juxtaposition of female heroes against relatively realistic stuff. It's jarring. Jay Kristoff, some of the stupidest, most overwrought purple prosed YA tripe around, but it's entertaining.

Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova, again a very overwrought YA series but entertaining. Gets a extra point in it's favor because the protaganist is in her 20s instead of being a teen.

I read a lot of shitty MilSF too. Jamie Sawyer does a pretty decent Colonial Space Marines vs Zergomorph Predators series, and Marko Kloos does one about horrific H.R. Giger giraffes that's good but has started to drag somewhat since the past three have been "humanity loses another planet because they underestimated the aliens/couldn't stop infighting"

Sure, it's the best anime has to offer for someone looking for fantasy or scifi on a grander scale with somewhat interesting worldbuilding, but it's still worthless compared to the many things you could read in that time. Watch the movies in beautiful 1080p for their genuinely high production standard and ignore the rest.
