Also would love to pick your brain about if the hype about Grossman is justified (debating moving L&F to the top of my list after I finish my current book)

I have only read it in Russian. Usually I just say go with the most recent translation that has good reviews, but P&V has made it so that that is no longer sound advice. I think the stuff about translations being significantly lesser than the original is a bit overblown unless we’re talking about poetry. Getting 95% of the work and losing 5% because of translation is better than not reading it at all.

I am very happy Grossman is getting recognition.

P&V and Garnett are both bad (I first read Dostoevsky in the Garnett translation).

P&V have a lot of clout because of their publishers. Garnett basically writes in her own style. Garnett/Tolstoy and Garnett/Dostoevsky sound very similar which is ridiculous.

David McDuff was the best translator of Dostoevsky in my opinion.

# is Generations of Winter any good ? from your point of view.
# does And Quiet Flows The Don have any literary value, from an academic point of view ? I'm asking because I read some of it and enjoyed it, but felt like I was reading George Martin or Harlan Coben or whatever - efficient stuff but a little shallow
# any living russian writers who get academic recognition ? I'm thinking about Svetlana Alexievich, but dunno to what extent her works are considered literature.

P&V are so overrated.

For Tolstoy, Aylmer and Louise Maude are actually pretty good. Their W&P is by far the best I have read in English.
