Since it's the 25th Anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu...

What are /lit/'s thoughts on this book as well as any of Mark Bowden's other works?

Also feel free to discuss the Diary of Anne Frank since it was the /his/ pregnant Anne Frankposters that inspired me to make this thread.

The only decent memoir to come out of the recent business is One Bullet Away, which (coincidentally) was written by the platoon leader in Generation Kill. Almost everything else is amateurish or grunt work trying and failing to be the next Guadalcanal Diary or some general's contentless pontification. There's also a subgenre of "grrrlpower" usually written by feminist agitators for gender integration.

Warrior King is interesting, but only because of how deeply un-selfaware the author is. I wouldn't recommend it in general.

I thought all of these are pretty good, some are written by less self aware authors than others, but all in all pretty good for getting a look into the modern world of special operations

The Only Thing Worth Dying For
Pretty well documented narrative about the ODA that was tasked with protecting Karzai at the beginning of the Afghan war, ending with an account of how they got bombed by friendlies

Lone Survivor
Unironically pretty good and sincere. Couldn't even finish the first chapter of his second memoir as it was too 'murka

Where Men Win Glory
the life of exnfler pat tillman and the circumstances surrounding his death by fratricide

Kill Bin Laden
pretty self explanatory, written by a Delta officer involved in the hunt around 2001

Seal Team Six by Howard Wasdin
Includes an account of the battle of mog as well

Murican Sniper
Pretty good desu

No Easy Day
Written a devgru operator who was on the mission that *allegedly* killed bin laden

Hey there, you seem to know your stuff so I'll ask you but maybe someone else might also know. Does anyone recall any books which talk about what I believe was a story involving the Taliban in Afghanistan. It was about a troop of guys who were debating on whether or not to capture and tie up this young civilian girl because they were pretty sure she was reporting back to the Taliban on the troop's movements. I am pretty sure some of them even considered killing her.

I'll break them up by genre

Personal accounts:

In the Company of Heroes by Michael Durant (Durant's account of the Battle of Mogadishu)

Jarhhead by Anthony Swofford (Scout Sniper who served in the Gulf War)

Night Mission to Mogadishu by Trent LaLand (US Marine who served in the Invasion of Panama and whose unit was later diverted from the Persian Gulf to evacuate 300 people trapped in the US Embassy in Mogadishu at the outbreak of the Somali Civil War)

Generation Kill by Evan Wright (reporter who was embedded with Recon Marines during the opening months of the Invasion of Iraq)

Strategy

Imperial Life in the Emerald City Rajiv Chandrasekaran (failings of the Coalition Provisional Authority during the first year of the Iraq War). This is in my opinion, the most important book ever written about the Iraq War.

Al Qaeda's Great Escape Philip Smucker (failure of the US Military to kill Osama bin Laden in 2001, also covers Operation Anaconda)

Fiasco by Thomas E. Ricks (poor planning behind the Iraq War)

Corporate Warriors by P.W. Singer (rise of Private Military Companies from the 1990s onward)

One Bullet Away is the best recent one.

But like I said, Lone Survivor is not a waste of time. The author doesn't fall hard for the obnoxious tropes of the genre.
