Is there some sort of a "beginner's guide to poems" book? If not, what poet would you recommend as the most accessible one? I know this will sound something like a boomer meme, but Dragon Quest XI (pic related) has awoken in me a love for poetry I never knew I had - every person in one region speaks in Haiku and while some are humorous, I (possibly amateurishly) consider some very beautiful.

Keats
Blake

Any particular collection by Keats? I've stumbled upon two "Collected Poems" tomes but as far as I see, there's no annotations and detailed descriptions

Lennard's poetry handbook is nice for beginners and it's easy to get online. It covers all the technical aspects and gives many examples. Browsing a poetry anthology like the norton one is nice too.

This, start with the biggies.

You don't need annotations for the first time you read a poem.

What are some other biggies? Up until now I've pretty much only read prose, save for Homer and Milton but those are epics, not poems..

"The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock" is a pretty good beginners poem. T.S. Eliot in general is a source of some good poetry even though he is shat on routinely on this board.

yup. Lennards poetry handbook often references the 5th edition of the norton anthology. It's a bit dry but is a fantastic guide to the craft of poetry (the instagram poets NEED to read it). absolutely essential.

I'll take your advice and start with Lennard's poetry handbook, seems pretty nice. I'll then move on to the mentioned "biggies". However, on my PC I have a few poem collections and I was wondering if you could shed some light on if those are worth a read/if better versions exist

>Coleridge, Poems and Prose (pic related)
>The Collected Poems of Hatsuo Basho (I'd really like to read some haiku)
>Lord Byron's Poems
>The Love Poems of Rumi (I'm really skeptical towards this one as it's authored by Deepak Chopra)
>Leaves of Grass (honestly, this seems abnormally large but I hear it mentioned on here a lot)

Get a Norton anthology.

I'm reading pic related on my iPad currently. It is a very good edition and they are a pretty quality publisher, currently reading their release of Kafka's complete short stories.

This is actually a nice thread

inb4 someone complains about Bloom.
Its a comprehensive sampling, and introductions providing context are important.

What's the difference between this and his "Poets and Poems"?

That is critical analysis of poets and poems, the above gives context for the authors culture/time period/influence etc.

The Art of Reading Poetry is just his essay from the intro of the above too.
