Have you read this gem yet ?
Just got translated.

There is a kind of hatred which is peculiar to modern man. Modern man hates himself. This hatred that modern man experiences comes from an abandonment of his very nature, an infidelity to what man essentially is.

In this work, Marcel De Corte (1905-1994), one of the great Thomists of the 20th century, examines the sources and the remedy of the curious malady which so marks modern man and Western Civilization today. De Corte establishes that the salvation of our civilization lies in a return to a natural politics and supernatural religion. The lost "secrets" of the natural moral law and the supernatural doctrine contained in the Catholic catechism hold the key to rejuvenate the disintegrating society which surrounds us. Only a respect for these truths, and a return to the sanity they provide, can assure the continuance of a truly Christian civilization, as well as the restoration of that stability modern man so desperately needs.

that last paragraph makes it look like something someone looking to justify themselves would read, or write
>Only a respect for these truths, and a return to the sanity they provide, can assure the continuance of a truly Christian civilization
i mean, reviving christianity will surely revive christianity, don't know about the rest, and i guess that's what the book is for, but this isn't the best first impression, although it'd be odd to have a thomist piece minus the religious motivation
but i'm still interested because of joyce

True.
I think the emphasis is to be put on the "true" Christianity.
Christians in politics nowadays tend to be not aware of their doctrine enough : either a bit quietist, or voluntarist, or political augustinianists etc, and think that being good Christians will save the West etc, but Catholicism respects the natural order (that is a divine order), and putting it (and politics) aside would be a sort of moslem/prot mindset.

1 Truth is universal
2 Christ is God
3 He is born in the Roman Empire
4 The sign on the Cross was in Greek, Latin and Hebrew
5 The Gospels are written in Greek
6 The Church is Roman
7 Jews A.D. are antichristian by essence, just like you ; neopaganism is oriental pantheism with euro names and rejects the best of Pagan philosophy (Aristotle and Platon)

>we've entered a godless age, in the past people were more spiritual and better

This meme really needs to die. I mean, this book came out in the 1960s and reactionaries nowadays are longing for that era. It was also a common perception in the aftermath of the french revolution, or even the reformation that this was going on. Medieval scholars were a lot more secular than people nowadays pretend.

That being said, that doesn't invalidate the viewpoint completely, but there needs to be a balancing perspective for this to work. It would make more sense to stop see 'modernity' as encapsulating a number of inhuman qualities and instead see that have been ever present. Materialism, vanity, tyranny, lacking a sense of belonging or direction, spiritual conflict etc. have always been around. They aren't new.

True, but the book is far from being caricatural.

He had over 10k students in his 40 years of teaching in Belgium, and quite a lot of the important francophone aristotelians from the 50s to the 90s were students of his.
Also, very influencial in franco orthodox Catholic circles. He contributed to the fight for Tradition a lot.
It's not because Gilson is the only known thomist that he's the best and the only one.
De Courte, Koninck, Jugnet, Garrigou-Lagrange, Guérard des Lauriers, Lachance, Hugon, Tonquédec, Jolivet, Verneaux, all these thomists are sadly unknown nowadays, yet quite influencal and very good.
