You may be right to claim that the prof isn't egotistical. However, it wouldn't have hurt to maybe see what he has to say. I could understand if half the class raised their hands, but one guy shouldn't take up much time.

In this case it might look like the question was asked expecting nobody to say yes and so a very important question could be roundabout assumed without argument. "Well, surely all reasonable people would agree with my basic assumptions". Then when one guy raises his hand, well, he's probably just dumb or religious or something, lol, moving on.

this is why the question needs to be rephrased. usually when one speaks about transcendent truth one is speaking about some kind of platonism. it is perfectly acceptable to be against platonic and metaphysical views. when the question is posed in such a decontexualized way, it can easily be subject to the stupidest reversals.

This discussion. drives me up the wall. Several of my friends are philosophy PhD candidates who either have graduated or are about to graduate. They're all moral realists, and they all tell me that moral realism is out of fashion and that the mainstream of philosophy is relativist (and subsequently proceed to act like they're daring rebels). Every time I talk to (academic or professional) relativists about this, they act like everyone is a realist and THEY are painted in to a corner.

I am a hard anti-realist, so my money is on the realists being whingy crybabies, but it rly makes u think

>> No.11837693

Well regardless of that particular debate our we-live-in-a-society really needs to stop holding up rebellion as valuable in itself.

>> No.11837715

>>11837693
Why?
I think it is valuable, because it leads to ramification of thought.

>>11837615
Recent surveys of the field demonstrate that moral realism still holds a comfortable majority (>50%). This is even more common in top ranked programs (both PGR and QS).
