How good is this translation? I read the Oxford Metamorphoses some years back and I enjoyed it. I'm looking to read Metamorphoses again. Is Golding's really THE best or do people just read it because of Shakespeare?

People read it because of Shakespeare. The best translation is Dryden, who is also the best translator of the Aeneid.

Inferior to the Mandelbaum translation.
A lot of important words missing, strange capitalisation, and even in the first pages a lot of the Gods aren't even mentioned.
It is reformatted to an English rhyming scheme. Revisionist, secularized trash.

As you can see clearly, the Gods are written out of creation as elements of nature, even relegated further down the page. And the whole writing scheme is shifted to suit his Anglo sensibilities.

Pound called Golding’s translation “The best book in the language.” I wrote a whole graduate paper on the gusto and the fucking madlad art in Golding. Just know it’s an Ovid seen through the ruddy fantastically free lense of rhyme, the Elizebethan age, genius.
