How did the English language end up being so prominent instead of, say, French? Was Shakesmeme that good?

because the bulk of mass entertainment after the victorian era was in english I think, the biggest export of the US in particular is media entertainment and with it comes the english language
Its the same as academic literature being dominated by german, pre 20th century almost all academic texts were in german, or translated from a german source

America was the hot shit after WW2 and since it's culture and products dominated Europe, it's national language also became dominant. If France took control of all the colonies way back instead of England, and then every world event played out exactly like events in our history played out, French would be the dominant language in Europe (just like it was before WW2)
