hey /lit/, I've read 100s of books but never got around to the classics like Moby Dick, The Great Gatsby, Tom Sawyer, Catcher in the Rye or stuff like Brave New World or Tolkien.

The only classics I've read are Lolita, Lord of the Flies and Heart of Darkness. Where should I start? I'm not picky about genres I read all of them, though I dislike most romances.

Good look there. Brave New World is great. For Tolkien, I can only recommend the Hobbit, as LOTR is 80% explaining the universe, 20% actual plot. I haven't read the Silmarrillion, so I can't say anything about that. Haven't read the others on your list either, so yeah...

FFS, this is why I don't read and type at the same time. Replace tom sawyer with romance >_>

I didn't know Great Gatsby was romance, never read it :/

Great Gatsby Plot Basics:

Guy loves girl.
Girl is rich elitist bitch.
Guy gets money.
Guy goes after girl again.

Yeah... it is kind of cheesy romance, but damn the writing is good.

Dont even bother with Moby Dick, we all know what its about and what happens and the digressions just arent worth it. Great gatsby is a practically a novella so I'd start there. Tolkien is all really good, but the Hobbit is obviously a good starting point for that.

What is this, OP?

I've only read Lolita and Heart of Darkness and I'm reading Lord of the Flies currently. Are you my clone or what?

Moby Dick is brilliant, but most people don't like it so it would be worth looking into some of Melville's short stories (some of which are every bit as good, but 600 pages shorter).

Don't read Gatsby, read "This Side of Paradise" for Fitzgerald.

For modern and strange, read some William Burroughs (Junky or Naked Lunch to start)

Tom Jones is a comedic Romance, one of the greatest pieces of 18th century lit (a great social indictment; as is Gulliver's Travels)

Barry Lyndon is great dark comedy

Just a broad spectrum of suggestions for you to consider.

LOTF is such a bad book. Read Tom Sawyer first, then Don Quixote after.

For Whom the Bell Tolls
Grapes of Wrath
Count of Monte Cristo
Les Miserables
1984 or Brave New World
Catch 22

Start with those then go from there, you really can't go wrong.
