The elites of a given time period are usually not that stupid... they may use religious justifications for wars, it may be an added benefit/reason for war, but any non-laughable historian will tell you, whether it’s the intra-European religious wars or something like the Crusades, a big motive was desire for power, land, resources. The issue is not in Jesus’s teachings but humanity’s inherent selfishness and violence.

Again, this famously repressive apparatus of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages is a corrupt degeneration of Christ’s teachings, a repressive apparatus which existed for money and temporal power (overvaluing which is explicitly against Christianity). The issue is not in religious figures but in humanity’s herd instinct and cruel nature. Real religion is, paradoxically for most, probably the single most effective thing humanity has devised to help us transcend the herd instinct and our base lower natures.

Look at fascism and totalitarianism in the 20th century (famously atheistic and anti-religious in communism). The same tendencies are seen without being allied to any organized religion. The problem is not religion itself but the inherent fascist impulse in man, especially in creating large repressive institutions. take away true religious faith and, often enough, the gap will be filled by some equally fervent and zealotrous endeavor. Hitchens, in being an atheist zealot, is much like the religious zealots he criticizes. The problem is zealotry, not religion.
