I've just read that Thus Spoke Zarathustra should be last if not nearly last in all his works. "The Basic Writings of Nietzsche from Modern Library Classics has a good order, although I would place Gay Science first before The Birth of Tragedy.

To get into Nietzsche, it is highly recommended, although not exactly 100% necessary to read Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer, who was heavily exposed to Kant's work through Fichte during his training as a philosopher, took plenty of influence from the Upanishads and a bit from Christian mystics like Boehme and Meister Eckhart.
Nietzsche also took quite a bit of inspiration Goethe, Spinoza, Dostoevsky (mostly in his latter years), Emerson, and Wagner. He loved Greek tragedy and Romantic music.

If I wanted to do an express journey through Western culture, I'd read the Old Testament, Plato's essential dialogues, and the New Testament. The Book of Genesis is the alpha. The Book of Revelation is the omega. Jesus may be known as the logos, but Plato's works are the logoi.
