The Romance of the Forest - Radcliffe
Evelina - Burney
Love in Excess - Hazewood
The Female Quixote - Lennox

These are classics of the genre. In addition to romance, they all have their own things going on (Radcliffe employs gothic imagery/settings, Burney uses the epistolary format, Lennox uses parody similar to Cervantes).

Are literary works by women really that bad compared to men?

>> No.11774063

>>11774038
no, it's mostly just memers. people who genuinely believe all women are shit writers tend to be insecure themselves, they must pride themselves on the fact that they were born with innate talent. even if they're a really shitty writer, they can comfort themselves in the belief that their maleness allows them to be better than any woman, despite lacking any evidence that proves their worth.

I agree with you for the most part, but I dislike Atwood after only having read the Handmaid’s meme. Should I read other stuff by her? Is it better? I really didn’t like HT

There is good literature by women, i think people have in their minds the massive collection of absolute garbage that women write, romance, ya, im not even up on the categories anymore. Men write that stuff too of course, but when people think of male literature they tend to think of the western canon, which is largely male.

I think jt's a bit like sports actually. There are some women that are genuinely really good at at sports, but when you think of women's sports and men's sports, the distinction is pretty clear. Since writing literature is not physical, it is different, but in practice that seems to be how things have happened, if less dramatically, ie. some people think Dickinson is the best American poet of both sexes, but nobody thinks any woman is the best hockey player.

The male population just has a higher distribution of what you might call "geniuses", or people who excel in their field. Its not that women aren't good writers, its that good writer's who are women are rarer than their male counterparts.
Most people from either gender are braindead proles anyways.

Read "A good man is hard to find" by flannery O'connor. It's a great romance short story. Very sweet and comfy.

what are good feminine romance novels set in a calm pastoral town, ideally with not much conflict

>> No.11774448

That sounds very boring.
Nothing worthwhile comes easy, any good mate is going to have suitors from all angles gunning for them.
I reckon a satisfying romance, or story in general, has to have at least a conflict of interests.

Two people just agreeing all the time and being comfy isn't really an event to write a story about.

Rule of thumb for writing satisfying fiction is; is this the most interesting part of this character's life? If not, why aren't I writing about that?

>> No.11774518

>>11774448
yes, precisely, it would be quiet. whether that makes it boring or not is up to the reader. a quick example as to what i'm referring to thematically would be the film brooklyn, were 2/3 of it are just pleasant scenes of a boy/girl story.
>two people just agreeing all the time and being comfy
well that's an extreme case of what i propose, but, yes, like that. indeed it would be difficult to make a story without conflict, if even possible, but surely it's not too out there formally? to my knowledge it's been done in music (ambient), and film (akerman, benning).

but to the fair i'm up for any type of romance novel that strikes my interest. don't think i've ever read one to begin with, so i'm just coming up with a description of what i imagine i'd like. i've thought about picking up something by jane austen because i like whit stillman and he bases a lot of his work on her, but i'm not sure how sold i am on the "classical" aspect of it. alternatively something nyc like annie hall would be nice.

i don't know where to look for these though, if i google it it's just gonna be a bunch of goodreads-tier kind of bestsellers.

Nobody’s mentioned George Eliot, but idk if she’s romance. Where to start with her? I know middlemarch is her most famous but I don’t want to be 600 pages into a novel and realize I don’t like her writing...
