If an author has written a book with no hidden meaning he is an idiot and not worthy of study

Hidden meaning in books is meant to boost the readers morale. Without it they cant be special snowflakes.

No it isn't. It's realizing that there are NPCs. Not everyone is a player. Solipsism implies only the self exists.

Has anyone actually looked at the primary source article for this study? Is everyone just blindly citing that blog post on Psychology Today (a pop psychology magazine, far from having the same reputability of something like PubMed) from 2011 that only had a sample size of 30 that used unreliable self report method of collecting data? Not to mention it suggests that inner speech is only occurring 26% of the time not that only 26% of people have it. Not to mention psychologists have often turned up false positives due to poor methodology? Has anyone tried reading any other primary research that could either refute or back up this claim?

Or do we really just want an excuse to say HURR DURRRR UR NPC that badly

Being an NPC means lack of deeper thought and self-awareness. Merely by wondering whether you're an NPC or not, you cease to be one.
