German literature for beginners

Hi /lit/,

I am looking to develop my German reading skills. What are some good books to start off with? I am not a complete beginner since I had German for 4 years at pre-university school but it is not great either.

Thanks in advance! Decided to use Thomas Mann as end goal.

Any book of your interest in german. That's how I learned english as a german. Just buy books and read them, you'll get quicker with ease book. 90% of my books (around 800) are in english, there is no reason to go with "easy lit" if you're not a brainlet.

Thomas Mann is a good goal but not as an end goal. His prose is very complex and syntactical but his grammar is basically perfect and he only uses high German, so you could read him just fine without really being fluent and well-versed in German Mundart. A better end goal, for instance, would be Berlin Alexanderplatz or late Arno Schmidt as their prose is less conventional and they, especially Schmidt, write very dialect-ridden.
