I'm also a big fan of Richard Posner. He has written a lot of interesting academic material and writes with an excellent style.

Lawyer here. I think probably Justice Holmes. He was literally a Boston Brahmin, an officer in the Civil War, and wrote some of the best opinions and letter of the Anglosphere. Posner is a big fan of him too.
